What do you guys think about this new add from Toyota...

I know a few of you have front lockers... Is it true that when your locked in the front it is harder to steer?

ahhh crap...

Anything other than full locking differentials, IMHO is undesirable.

By using wheel braking to lock the tire without traction also causes you to loose precious forward momentum.
Many manufactures have used the abs system to prevent wheel slip on 4wd trucks for years, this is far from a first.

To answer the question: Yes, it's difficult to steer with the front axle locked.

I wouldn't cry if my rig came equipped with traction control. I've heard good things about the 100 series Land Cruiser's ATC, supposed to be way better than previous attempts. I guess it depends on how fast it is. If it won't let a tire spin, it would be damn close to having a locker, perhaps even better in some situations. If it takes time to engage, it would be less attractive. I wouldn't write it off just because it's been tried before.

I wasn't writing it off because it was tried before, just how they make it sound like it's this new and exciting nevertriedbefore technology.

I'm writing it off because in order to work it has to BRAKE a tire, which also slows that tire down or completely stops it, now this is fine for a tire in the air, but NOT GOOD for a tire that has partial traction. All of the reviews I had read about previous systems stated that the vehicles (all tested in a more muddy/clay situation) lost forward momentum when the system activated as it had to brake a tire to achieve traction slowing the vehicle down. For the adventures I take part in and the fact that the caR50 needs all it can get anything that removes my momentum is bad. Considering that this is a newer SUV it's probably closer to an R50 in specs than a truck so the comparision is somewhat apples to apples.

With a locked IFS, I couldn't really turn at all when the front was in. I can now with a SAS...that's how much easier a solid axle steers with the same pitman arm and steering box.

It's still better than all those electronics in that cruiser.

Yep... I agree with you all.. If this stuff was worth a crap we'd all have it by now..

However with that being said... this is the kind of Media crap that goes out and the Nubee will see it, buy it... and we end up towing them out.. Smile

PS.. Don't forget this comes with Hill Descent too smiley1
