Was watching Powerblock today on Spike and they were assembling an engine on Extreme 4x4. I'm looking at it thinking.. man, this looks familiar. Sure enough, its a Pathfinder VG30 V6.

How cool is that?

They showed the truck later in the show. Looks like a later pathy with 4 doors.

I wonder why they're bothering to rebuild the engine? They could get a vg33 for way cheaper than the cost of a rebuild. Just parts alone came to almost $1800 to redo my vg30 without any machining, that's why I went with the vg33.

It makes for better TV.. I guess they have been working on this pathy for a while... I heard they plan to use it as their "AV trail truck"

Here's more info..

wonder what they'll make of the pathy. I would have just thrown in a crate vg33.

Im watching the episode again today.. it looked like hey ended up buying a new longblock for it rather than rebuilding, but they went through the rebuild parts costs if they wanted to rebuild the one they had.

From what they've said, they are building this pathy as a crew truck to follow along to get trail footage. It'll have a storage drawer and rack setup in the back for the cameras and all the gear.

They're installing Calmini 3.92:1 gears in the T-case and a nice clutch in it.

Jessi said the new longblock they picked up was $2500... they priced out the rebuild parts at $19xx.00

That sounds right. When I dropped the 3.3 in back in '02, it was $1800 for parts. The machining would eat up the difference in the long block cost, not too mention no warranty if you build it yourself.

Sadly, building an engine yourself (unless it's some extreme variant) just isn't a money saving proposition anymore. It's far cheaper to buy a long block than it is to pay for parts/machining.
