So here are my questions:

How do I pass emissions tests in PHX or Cal with my 1979 Ford Bronco 408 (no emissions pump, EGR ect.)?

Also, I assume my 66 Patrol with a V8 will be exempt due to age. Does anyone know of any other loop holes to register and run them on the road without having to pass a regular emissions test? Currently in MD the 79 Bronco is a Historic vehicle and as long as it is not my daily driver I'm exempt for emissions. Also, my Patrol is a Hot Rod (plates and all) and is exempt as well.

Thoughts opinions?

The Ptroll will be no issue.

The Bronco will be a problem. You have to pass a visual underhood inspection and they have to see the EGR, etc. there on '75-95ish vehicles.

Is there an EFI conversion for that thing you could do? Those typically come with those types of controls and you'll probably net some additional HP and MPG out of it.

So a fake EGR won't be enough? Big Grin

I always figured that the EFI system would automatically fail me. I would love to make that upgrade. Plus, if I had due to the law - that is one law I would not mind adhering to.

EFI would be great, but you have to have those visible pieces, primarily the EGR. Since EFI requires all the sensors and stuff anyways, it'll run way cleaner with EFI and the sniffer part of the test should be no issue.

Only as long as EFI was available on those engines, or if it's aftermarket EFI, then it needs an EO number to be C.A.R.B approved.

I'm surprised that none of you missed the easiest solution to passing emission tests in PHX, that is don't live in PHX. Do what I did and live in far north PHX, AKA Yavapai County. NO emission tests here!

SoCAL is nice because there is no inspection, you just HAVE to pass smog, which obviosuly wont work for you, but as Curry said, stay away from SoCAL.

The patrol is exempt here thouugh.

All of Kalifornia requires a visual inspection to pass smog, most stations just don't do it. I've been asked twice for the CARB number for my headers.

I had a honda fail the visual inspection once due to a broken plastic t-connector that had been glued!

That is one of the reasons they have those "inspection only" stations, they are supposed to look closer at that kind of stuff.

I had my old 1980 720 fail for a similar reason here in AZ. A connector had broken off of the charcoal canister so I repaired it. I ended up having to go to the junkyard and find another canister.

Seriously..........I have only had 4 smog checks in my life, 2 of them were "test only" and all they did was plug into my computer, put the sniffer on and that was it. They had to open the hood, but never gave anything a second look smiley50
