I agree...mid to high 90's on Sunday afternoon between the village and the campground. Doing that in the hottest part of the day was rough. DL made it though, to her credit. It just nearly killed both of us not to get down there before the hottest part of the day. Had I been on my own, I'd have gotten there with everyone else much earlier, but that's the way it goes.
I just had a major charley horse here at my desk a while ago. Almost made my eyes tear up! Finally worked it out. Hamstring. I actually found it much easier to walk myself and keep my own pace than try to either stay caught up with someone else, or stay behind waiting for someone. I did the 9 miles from the village to the top in about 3 hours, 15 minutes. Not a bad pace by anyones standards, IMO. The switcbacks were slow, but steady, and man, did I sweat!!! I'm proud of myself, and I will tell you, no one just walks up and down this at our age without being in reasonable shape. 1998 Frontier 4x4, 2002 Xterra 4x4, and Z28 street rocket Pass here and go on. Going by what the lady at the village said that it was 105 on Sunday for the high. All I know is it was hot. I still had a great time - even with the heat. Some people can take the heat, I can't. I know that and I try to take precautions. I didn't let it stop me from going and having fun.
I'll always live for the nights I can't remember and the friends I'll never forget! |

Got SALt? This salt is good! ............ http://www.realsalt.com/realsalt_faq.cfm ................. "What is Redmond RealSalt? As its name implies, Redmond RealSalt® is-well, real salt. "Real salt, as opposed to what?" Very simply, RealSalt® as opposed to the so-called "salt" most people unsuspectingly use. It may surprise many people, but in its natural form, salt is not sparkly white or free flowing. Actually, the "table salt" and many sea salts most people are familiar with have been bleached, refined, and mixed with anti-caking agents and iodine. Many so-called "table salts" also contain sugar, in the form of dextrose-meant to cover or disguise an otherwise harsh and bitter flavor. In fact, a quick glance at the ingredients label on most "table salt" products might surprise you! In addition to sodium chloride, you'll probably find calcium silicate or sodium silicoaluminate, dextrose, and potassium iodide. By contrast, Redmond RealSalt® is real salt-unrefined and natural-free from any additives or chemicals of any kind. What are the Colored Specks in RealSalt? RealSalt's unique "pinkish" appearance and flecks of color come from more than 50 natural trace minerals, including iodine. By contrast, other so-called "table salts" are white because of bleaching and refining. Click here for a complete mineral analysis. Does RealSalt Come From Utah's Great Salt Lake? No! RealSalt® does NOT come from Utah's Great Salt Lake. RealSalt® comes from an ancient salt deposit near the small town of Redmond, Utah, more than 150 miles south of the Great Salt Lake. Isn't RealSalt More Expensive? Even when used liberally, a family of four will likely use only one 26 oz. pouch of RealSalt® every five to six months. So actually, the daily cost of RealSalt® is less than a penny. Given the high cost of food these days and the fact that salt is the primary ingredient responsible for taste in food, it makes sense to use something natural that really enhances-rather than masks-the natural flavor of foods! Additionally, the rich savour of RealSalt means using less salt. Is RealSalt Sea Salt? Yes! During the earth's Jurassic era, a sea covered much of what is now North America. Over time the water in this sea evaporated, leaving the salt in a vast deposit in central Utah. A range of volcanoes erupted around the ancient seabed, sealing the salt and trace minerals from modern pollutants. Is RealSalt® Different Than Other Sea Salts? Absolutely! And 35,000 chefs agree! In a professional taste test of top gourmet natural salts, RealSalt® was deemed the Best of Show and Gold Medal winner by professional chefs of the American Tasting Institute. However, don't just take our word for it. We encourage you to experience the RealSalt® difference yourself! Take the RealSalt® taste test...First taste RealSalt®, then try any other salt. The difference will amaze you! But Doesn't Everyone Know Salt Causes High Blood Pressure? We definitely encourage anyone that may have high blood pressure to consult his or her health practitioner or physician. We also find the following health expert's comment interesting: ‘"I don't believe there is any basis whatsoever for a public health recommendation for eating any particular sodium content diet. A scientific problem ought to be solved by data. And there is no data."' ¹ What are the Health Benefits of Salt? "[S]odium is crucial for maintaining the health of every cell in the human system. It permeates the fluid between cells (often called the ‘extracellular fluid') and potassium exists mainly on the inside of the cells (in the ‘intracellular fluid')...If either of these minerals is deficient or in excess, cell permeability becomes compromised and the health of all the cells suffers. Besides being a component of extracellular fluid that bathes every living cell, sodium is important in two other ‘salty oceans' in the body-our blood and our lymphatic fluid. It is also necessary for the production of hydrochloric acid, the digestive enzyme secreted by the stomach in order to digest protein. Along with potassium, sodium is required for the proper functioning of our nerves and the contraction of our muscles... With the many crucial roles sodium plays, it's clear that if we had no sodium, we would cease to exist." ² Gittleman also notes that "[R]educing sodium too much can be just as harmful as consuming large amounts of it. Too little can cause spasms, poor heart rhythms, sudden death and even increase the risk of heart attack in hypertensive patients." ³ 1. " ..................... "Climate change is no longer science. It's politics... Climate change is also about power. Power to control.... It's about who gets to decide: how much energy we will have... where that energy will come from... what it will cost... It's about simulations, scenarios and monsters conjured up by computer models that should never be used to chart government policy -- especially on matters that will profoundly affect our livelihoods, living standards, life spans and dreams of a better future. You know, my co-worker Steve was down there from Sunday through Wednesday. They were at Havasu Falls where she was found on Tuesday.
He took some pictures right up the creek where her body was. I'm sure it is hidden in the foilage but I'm sure she is in the pictures, just hidden. Spooky. Meh. |

The first time was around 14, the second going to the Falls was when I was 16. Then when I was 19 I went down Bright Angel/South Kaibab Trail going down to Phantom Ranch. Then did it again when I was 21. Of all the poeple I have meet, They all say Havasupai is is the easiest. This is what I said in my first post. No trail into the canyon should be taken lightly, there are death do to sun stroke/dehydration at the canyon. Some just hike in with little to no water, others just don't drink enough. Anytime I planed on going I will start walking 2 miles a day 6 months in advance. Then I will increase as time gets closer. I am glad everyone made it out ok. As for the 4000ft diferance that was the number I was told as a kid and could find anything in a quick search to give real numbers. But from Phantom Ranch to the top it is a 6500ft difference. If you do know the closer number please post it up. I would hate to make poeple beleive that what you guys did isn't that special, because it is. Going into the canyon, no matter what trail you go in on is just a wonderful experience. If you do it again I am hoping to go, as it has been awhile sicne I have been at that side of the canyon. -Mr. Goat- One way to fix a jeep is to shoot the driver |

Begin at 6,820' elevation at Bright Angel Trailhead, dropping steeply to the Colorado River at 2,760'
This is the biggest drop I know of. It is 4000 feet. Ugh. Meh. |

you maybe right, the north to the bottom is 1000ft more. I may just have my number messed up. Climbing out of Bright angel makes you want to jump over the edge to kill yourself. But if you live you have to climb that much more to get out.
10 miles on bright angel to the bottom or go 7.5 on South Kaibab to get to the bottom. but there is water on Bright angel at 5, 3, 1.5 miles in, so there is some help to get out. if you did Havasupai in 5 expect 7-10 hours for this. The last 4 miles are switchbacks The one good part of Phantom Ranch is the cabins/lodge and meals aready down there if you want to pay for them. Showers are also down there. -Mr. Goat- One way to fix a jeep is to shoot the driver |

Marshall - Thank you for all your work and effort to organize and coordinate this adventure. It's no small feat hurding this motley crew.
Also, thank you for getting out to South Mountain and hiking with me before the trip. I would have never had the stamina on the switchbacks to blow the pants off that 19 year old college girl without that preparation. Everyone who made any portion of that hike should be proud of their accomplishment and not worry about ranking it compared to someone else's accomplishments. Marshall has a picture of my zen moment at Mooney Falls. He also has pictures of the French Canadian girls in bikini's who have a current starting position in the line up. I reckon so.... |

Fun stuff, I had a whale of a time and enjoyed the water alot. I swam behind the falls around ten times. I liked climbing the shelf and diving into the impact zone, reminded me of surfing big waves and getting beefed. I did some rock diving too, very nice conditions, hot air and cool water. Of course now I am jonesing for more water, gonna have a trip to Baja this summer for some surf and all that jazz. See y'all next trip up there to the Grand Canyon.
