Dan, Joe, Jason, Steve and I headed down to Havasupai late April 2005. We made it out of Phoenix and made it to Seligman where Sam put us up in the Grand Canyon Lodge for the night.
We had a great dinner and too many beers that night in Seligman, rising before six the next morning was a bit hard. We had a big breakfast and went on down Route 66 to Indian Road 18. This is about the most lonely road in America, takes an hour to get to the trailhead parking lot from there. We dropped our bags for the mule and down the trail we went. One of the guys in our party had a rough time of it on the hike down and ended up taking the helicopter ride out from the village. We eat lunch in the cafe, bought buns and water in the store and made it to Havasu Falls just as it started raining. The rain let up and we found one of the only campsites left. No sooner had we set up our tents and the brats were cooking nice on the coals than a storm just hammered us. Dan was nearly hit by one of two large branches that put a hole in my tent and ruined Dans and his air mattress. The storm let up enough to eat our Brats then hit once again and rained off and on all night. Sunday morning we got a few visits to Havasu and Mooney Falls before it started turning stormy again. We were moved to higher ground by the tribe, and as soon as that happened we had good weather the reat of the day. We swam and stared at the falls and had a good day. The rain hit us again Sunday night and we awoke to everything wet to pack out for Monday morning. We actually welcomed the clouds on the ten mile hike out. Dan, Joe, Jason and I made really good time on the way out and the cold beer we had on ice at the top was the best beer I have had in awhile. In spite of the rain Havasupai remains my favorite place and will make the pilgramage every year I am able. Link to my pics Paradise 2005 One of my favorites |
