I was thinking about this after we talked~ WOn't it be hard to get a good campsite on a Saturday?

We went down on a Thursday morning last year and got primo- By Saturday there was not much left.

I'm still working on if we're going. If we do, we'll probably go a day early and try to save a good spot.

On the serious side I would like to try to attend this. I have seen Yzerman's, DBAX pictures of the area and it looks awesome. Put me on the probable list.

Okay Gabe! You are on your own for reservations.

Brian this is the same day I hiked down the past two years.

If you want to get down there Friday by all means. Big Grin

Always found a good spot, though. Is there a bad spot? Actually it is busy Saturday and everyone seems to bug out Sunday morning. Ideally it would be better to go down on Sunday and come out on Tuesday but then everyone needs more days off.

More people better chance of scenery....

Meh.

So, honestly, how dead would I be doing this hike? Obviously going down isn't quite as difficult as coming up.

Whew, finally got my reservations for five done.

Very busy little office, keep trying or let me know if you want me to add you to my party.

D, hey I can do it......start walking now. Truly one of the most beautiful spots on earth IMO. Out is the rub. You're tired, sore, and that last mile or so is up. But no bouldering or anything. It's all flat wide trail.

There is a helicopter that can take you and your pack out for 85.00. Runs many trips. Leaves from the village.

In fact everyone usually brings enough cash to pay for the chopper just in case it is needed.

What we do is get a hotel in Seligman or Peach Springs Friday night. Stop in Flag for dinner, get some sleep and leave the hotel as early as possible, say 6. Takes a hour to get to the hilltop on Indian Road 18. There are aboslutely no services at the hilltop. All you need to carry down is water, a small pack or a Camelback. I have a Platypus that goes in a pack. Everything else is in a big duffle bag and goes down on the mules.

So basically it's just walking. A real pretty one too. Start by going down the switchbacks, after a mile and a half it levels out. As the canyon walls get taller and closer in you get closer to the village, which is 8 miles from the top.

The village has the last non porta potty bathroom. A cafe, a general store. They have a lot of food there. Drinks (non alcoholic)snacks etc.

Register and pay the rest of the fees to the tribe at the village, then it's two miles to the campground, which is a mile long and sits under a canopy of trees between the falls. Havasu Falls is 100 feet and Mooney Falls is 200. I love the campground. It is a mile long, all the sites are right on the creek. There is a fresh water spring in the middle coming out of the canyon wall. Safe to drink. Most of the sites have one or two picnic tables. NO FIRES.

Spectacular.

Usually people check out Havasu Falls on Saturday, Mooney Falls on Sunday.

Hike out Monday morning. If it is warm, and not cloudy, the earlier the better to hike out. The village, 8 miles from the top is the last chance for supplies or any water. OR ANY WATER.

At the top, we keep a few cold beers in a cooler in the car, best beer ever. Stop and eat in Flag or Prescott depending on which way home, usually home by early evening.

It is a great excuse to get some exercise, and an accomplishmnent personally to make it to the top. Two years ago I back packed everything in and out just to do it.

Meh.

Man, I would love to go on this trip, 'cept I can't show my face in the Hualapai reservation... Got an upaid speeding ticket from a few years back on SR 66... Don't want to risk anything.

It's a sweet area, though. I spent 6 weeks one Fall, driving all the roads and trails in that Res. Made it up to the border w/ the Havasupai. Never did end up going there, though. Didn't feel like riding an ass for 3-4 hours to get to it...

It sure is hard going down. Ya gotta hold yourself back.. Better go on some of the shakedown hikes and drop the cancer sticks in the trash. 8 miles is a biotch ,especially when you have- what is it 250 feet per mile average gradient top to bottom?

I don't smoke cigarettes.

Yeah you do need to do that going down, your legs get sore above the knee the next day from going down the swithbacks too fast.

This will be my third year in a row to go, and it's why I'm going to the gym and doing these tune up hikes on Saturdays...

Looks like my mapquest pic died, guess I need to host it on my picturetrail site.

Meh.
