Got map questions? My wife, Rachel earned a degree in Geography with a emphasis in GIS from CSU Chico. She worked at Lonley Planet making travel books after graduation for a year before coming over to PG&E as an electric estimator......So anyway, if anybody has any far off map, gps, or any related questions, shoot them off to me and I'll get her to give ya a reply.

Excellent. I am fascinated by maps personally. Have a collection of every map and trail guide book i could find for Arizona. Even just got the Maptech Terrain Navigator software for Arizona and Utah.. and love it so far.

Where's a good place to purchase 15 minute topo maps? I've seen lots of 7.5 minute maps but those cover such tiny areas that I'd like something bigger.

Also, how can you tell what map you are buying without just looking at the area on each one - does the USGS index those in any way?

They index them by name. Usually a prominant geographical feature shown in the map.

One place you can check is REI. They've got TONS of maps for sale. They have all the USGS maps for AZ and more I think. They will probably have the 7.5min maps, but it would be a good place to look.

If you look on the map collar, it will tell you what map names border the map you are looking at. Its really a pretty strange system for cataloging the maps.. must be one of those traditional things, where the early cartographers named maps based on geologic features and it stuck. You figure a numerical system with a reference map would work better.

Are you lookin for maps of AZ or elsewhere?
