I have a 1985(720) 4x4 with with axle code CA41. I would like to know if I went Junk yard shopping if I found a truck with a CA43 or CA46, or a Stanza 4x4 if I could do a straight swap of the ring and pinion? Is there a difference between the R180 and the R180a ring and pinion?

There was a change in 06/1986 from 10mm diameter bolts to 12mm diameter bolts holding the ring gear to the carrier in both the C200 and the R180. The newer 12mm will interchange if you swap gears AND carrier.

I can't recall at the moment what the 180"a" meant.

It's a fine line between clever and stupid.

The R180a is the short-pinion version. Can't swap gears with the 720's R180.
