The Nissan dealership quoted me at 242.00 to install the after market diff drop bushings does this sound fair?

Yep. Actually it sounds like a pretty fair deal, prolly charging you 3 hrs of labor when it will probably take longer. That diff is a real PITA to get out of there, and removing the original bushings wont be fun either.
Of course you must remember that dealerships charge a premium. Try some mom and pop mechanics and you *might* save some money Scott 86.5 HB SE-V6 KC 4x4 86.5 HB Longbed XE 91 Chevy 1500 Sport |

You can do it yourself for free if:
you can drop the diff. I think on a hardbody you have to drop the Tbars to do this. You'll also unbolt the inner CVs from the flanges and remove the 4 bolts holding the diff and two Xmembers in. Frontiers and Xterras can be done without dropping Tbars. To remove the old bushings, get a torch fitting for a coleman propane bottle - the kind you use for your lantern and campstove and burn the rubber bushings out until you can tap the center sleeve out. Use a sawzall to make to cuts next to each other in the outer sleeves and then tap those out. The new bushings push right in. Use some vaseline for easy movement. Reassemble. 1998 Frontier 4x4, 2002 Xterra 4x4, and Z28 street rocket Pass here and go on. You're on the road to heaven - Kerouac |
