I am looking to purchase new tires for my 1984 4x4 Nissan. What is the tallst practical tire I can mount without making any modifications to the front, and, what is the best tire for daily driving and trail riding? Thanks in advance

Best tire for daily driving in the Outback or Iceland, or somewhere inbetween?

For mostly street, BFG ATs are good but if you do a lot of driving on gravel, the tread is just the right size to pick up and throw rocks.

Goodyear MTRs are good for rock, not too bad in mud, and not to loud on the highway.

x3 on the MT/Rs.

They are a little soft tho, so expect more tire wear. Also, be absolutely religious with tire rotation with these tires. Wink

it all depends on the terrain and the use of the vehicle...

mt/rs are better in dey situations... they aren't too impressive in east coast wheeling... they don't clean well in soft dirt/ mud... bfg m/t work well and last forever... I absolutely love my new Hankook Dynapro mts... and of course you can't go wrong with swampers... Wink

Thanks for the input. I should have stated that my trail running would be done in the west deseret of Utah, some grave but mostly two tracks that can become very slippery when wet. Also I had pretty much decided on MTR's 31x10.5x15, but am concerned about rubbing when turning if I only level the truck with the torsion bars. There is of couse plenty of room in the rear. AT's may be a little tame for some of the trails when wet, but then that dapens the fun a bit anyway

The rims you use will make the difference. Use rims with close to stock backspacing and you'll minimize the rubbing possibility. Wider offset wheels tend to rub more in the rear of the front fenderwells.

No Problem, I intend to use the stock wheels. I had considered using the 31x 9.5 x 15's but wanted as much width as possible for the sandy trails we have here.

You'd be better off going with a metric tire..

You'll get better clearance, a more true size (example a 31x10.5 is really a 29" tire) and a wider pattern..

Look into the 265's or better yet 285's (You'll need a lift for the 285's)

A 31x10.5 is not a 29" tire. It's about 30.5"

No not set on them. In fact I have been thinking on going with the Dick Cepek F-C II, or the Micky Thompson BAJA ATZ since it has a bit more open tread. Plus these options are closer to the amount I have budgeted for my tires

The ATZ's I dont know much about but the FC-II's I know someone that had them they have pretty good traction especially when aired down but he had a bad problem with the side lugs tearing completely off down to the steel belts
