Hello all,

My only vehicle, a 1995 Nissan D21 pickup (aka hardbody pickup) had the catalytic converter stolen from underneath it right in front of my house last night! My local awesome junkyard (http://www.pullapart.com) does not sell catalytics. Replacements are somewhat pricey on a quick call to Pep Boys.

Does anyone know of a good source of affordable new, or reconditioned, legit catalytic converters? Can be anywhere in the continental US, if they will ship. I can't get suckered on some hollowed out retread, as I have to pass the annual Atlanta emissions test here at the end of the summer.

Relevant engine details:
Nissan KA24E SOHC four (4) cylinder. I suspect that a cat from a D21/Pathfinder, or a 240sx (either KA24E or KA24DE) should work just fine.

The six banger for this truck is the nissan VG30 , on the chance that it is the same converter as the four cylinder.

Thanks so much!

You can buy a universal cat from summit racing or jegs for as low as $30-40. You don't have to buy a factory original.

I immediately thought of summit. The universals are much cheaper than the flanged, but I don't own a MIG or TIG welder to put it on. Thoughts on who would be best to do that for me?

I have a TIG in my lab here at school, but I can't move it around.

Thanks!

Any exhaust shop in the area should be able to do it for a good chunk less than $100

Catalytic converter thefts have been goin on for a while in the san francisco bay area. The price of precious metals has skyrocketed, thus criminals steal cats and take them to the recycler.

I found a maxflow cat from summit racing for 87 bucks. It arrived friday, and I put it on the car today. I used two bolts (tightening and lock) at each location, and I jb welded the locking nuts in place. They will have to cut it off if they want to steal it again.

The new cat noticeably improves performance, too, so perhaps its not all bad...

Meth addicts.

Cat's can fetch up to $80 recycled in some places depending on weight. So if you have an exhaust shop replace your cat, never let them charge you for disposal, if they do they are sleazy as an 80s porn star.

Yup, they're supposed to turn them into the feds for $$$. Some junkyards will accept cash ( no receipt) if you want to get your hands on one.

I had no clue any of this was going on. I'll watch out for my cat. It just uses 4 bolts to install.

One Word Answer: Skidplates.

Someone will have to work like hell to get at mine. I do worry about crap like that, where I live is not shady but not Pleasantville either. My truck sits parked for weeks, sometimes months, at a time, and I will be gone for a week or more at times with no one around to watch what's going on. All I usually find are more door dings Mad

I took a small universal catyl converter to the recycling yard the other day. I got $8 for it. The honeycomb insides is what is worth anything. My buddy has a car salvage yard. he gets $8-$35 for them and the buyer even cuts them out.

Speaking of valuable metal. They stole all the copper wire from the elect poll's the other day.

copper wire is being lifted everywhere. They’re braking into construction sites, stores. You got valuable metal right now, there grabbing it.
