any reason why the k&n filter would make my airbox lid not clamp closed?

A lesson learned late, is still a lesson learned.

I took the K&N from my 88 Mustang GT(put another air filter in so I didn't need it) and cut it to shape so it fits perfectly in my 2000 Frontier (saved me $50.00!) you need to mess with it to get those metal clamps to clip down on it..good luck

If you buy the droop in replacement K&N air filter, everything should snap in.

There's actually a rib or lip that sticks up on the rubber molding around the filter. I had to cut that off to make it fit in the box better.

No The drop in filters do not fit 100% correctly, you just have to do some minor trimming like Crunky said.
