What would be the better alternative to wiring the positive wire to the battery:

1. Running it into the fuse box, sticking the wire in a certain slot and shoving the fuse in on top of it. Bada Bing, juice to the radio!

Or

2. Running wire to a relay which runs to the battery, while the On wire runs to the ignition.

I'm currently running #1 but I'm having doubts about how effective it is.

I would just run it straight to the battery but I'd leave it on and have to get jumped off alot...

I ran #1 for a while.. the only BAD thing about it.. is that it bends the terminals in your fuseblock.. and when you go to remove it the fuses dont fit right (you have to bend them back again).

I'd say wiring to a relay directly to the battery is the best way to do it.. I have mine tapped into the cig lighter circuit right now, and i have a feeling that that is part of my ignition noise source.

The battery acts as a voltage sink.. you will get much less high voltage interference if you run straight off it (if your interference is in fact coming in off the power wires).

I think I'm gonna run #2 for a while and see what happens. I have a feeling that the way things are wired currently, I'm not getting full current to the radio, and output is down.

I make a new ground today cause I KNOW the old one wasn't very good. The new one is straight to the - pole.

I'm gonna get a relay tomorrow...

Somebody donated a big spool of NICE wire to the Will's broke-a$$ truck fund. This stuff is even gas-proof. It's just a PITA to strip...

I forgot to buy a relay today. Doh!

I talked to a guy who was about 50 miles away from here. Everthing was loud and clear on both ends. Something tells me my radio is working pretty darn good. big grin

I have talked to people all over the US on skips. The wave bounces off some part of the atmosphere and ends up traveling hundres of miles. It's pretty cool to hear somebody in Washington state all the way over here big grin

Wow, what kind of radio/amp are you running? If it is just a stock CB, the draw would not run the batt down overnight. Mine is run directly to the battery through a noise supressor. I dont want it on the ignition because of the trail runs. Whenever I turn the car off for a beer break or whatever, I want the radio always on to hear the groups plans. It has worked very well that way.

Please give me some details about your setup. I have a Cobra 18WXST to a Wilson 5000 roof top (tuned). I know the radio is a cheap one, but the dash mounting is too tight for a bigger radio. My range is rarely over 5 miles right now. I have been considering an amp. What are your suggestions.

Hehe I've got a used Cobra 19. It puts out 25 watts. Antenna is a Wilson Lil Wil. I finally got it tuned with my SWR below 1.5 and I'm happy.

I used to have it wired to a switch that decided where the power would come from, battery or ignition. It worked well but I felt like I wasn't getting full power to the unit. Range was only about a mile confused

I have the radio hooked up to a Radio Shack SWR meter. It's pretty good. It doesn't boost my output any but it will tell me if the antenna somehow gets outa tune.

My first 19 was only putting out 4 watts but it got about 15 miles range on average with my other stock-radio buddies. But then I blew that radio up somehow...

92pathse, I am a big time cb buff, or at least I was. I even at one point had a 60 ft tower with an LW150 verticle antenna and moonracker 4 beam. I had a Galaxy saturn turbo base station with an old heath kit tube 3000 watt amplifer.

In my old chevy truck I had, I ran a galaxy pluto with a texas star 667v behind it. My tech swamped the finals in the rear of the amp and made some other upgrades and it was doing almost almost 900 watts on AM and 1100 watts PEP on sideband. I use the old traditional wilson 1000 (same antenna for almost twelve yrs now)

I owned a number of radio, but at the moment the one I am using is RCI 2950. I am working on getting a new setup for my rig, I want to get a Galaxy 88DX with a good quality 400 watt amplifer.

As mentioned before, the direct battery hook-up would be the best way to go. If you decide to hook it into a switched circuit and still get interference, you could get a noise filter. i've heard some people get good results with them. You can pick one up at your local Radioshack.

Zhvonte- Do you still have your tube setup? Those are hard to come by. I've only seen one setup with tubes, and he was using it for his HAM. I picked up a 29 Classic after I fried my 148GTL. I was going to pick up a Galaxy 99, but it has a lot of useless stuff that I don't need. Do you know if the 88 has AM and upper and lower sideband? Soory. Back on topic smile

I must a agree to the battery would be the best today was the first time i got to really use my CB its an old Realistic (kinda suprised it worked) but i've got it hooked up to some wires under my dash that ran to the fuse box and found out that i can hear my engine through the speakers roll eyes But it could also be the fact that i am using a power cord from a VCR(It was all i had at the time to wire it up) eek

the galaxy 88 has am, fm, and ssb.

Tube amps arent really that rare, you just have to know where to look for them. They are not in demand like they once was so very little advertisement, if any, makes it all the harder to find.
