Welp, Mikey had a problem today. He didn't make it to Sierra Vista.

We got a call from Mikey at 7:30pm. You know, one of those - "I'm so f'in f'ed" calls. He was stuck on I-10. Think the tranny went out. Will have to explore some more to figure out if that's the real problem.

It runs (idles) and the brakes work. big grin Unfortunately, no gears - nadda, zilch, none.

So, we strapped him from I-10 and Maricopa Rd back to his dad's house.

So, now he's looking for a rebuilt tranny.

Poor guy. frown He was so happy to take the Pathy on it's maiden voyage.

I'm sure he's glad he has friends like me and DR. big grin

20 miles with a tow strap behind the Meany. Fun. To make him feel better, I drug him through a bunch of road construction, so at least his truck got to see dirt roll eyes big grin

Biggest tire'd trailer I've ever pulled!

Yep, pretty sure it's the tranny. It lived 130k+ with a lot of low speed crawling. R.I.P. He should be good to go with a rebuilt tranny.

At least he wasn't 50 miles the other side of Tucson before it died.

not to flame mikie, but i think he should have rebuilt the tranny while he was doing all the stuff down there. Sure, the tranny might have been running fine at the time, but anyone with a over 125k mi on their tranny has done exceedingly well. Would have saved him some hassel and headache. but maybe that is just me....

if you start doing that though, you end up in the "Might as well..." situation where you end up tearing down the whole truck to do a complete frame off rebuild when you originally intended just to change the oil and replace a bolt or two. hehe

Hey Marshall, if I had noticed a slippage or missing of any gear on the tranny before I parked it, or even while I was driving it around, NO WAY would I have even TRIED to drive it to SV.. I'm heading over to the parts yard tomorrow (I sure hope they are open) and I'm gonna check on that rusty D44, a toy front, a front D60, and of course, a 4.3 with tranny and case attached.

Mikey I feel your pain I just dropped $1750 to get my tranny rebuilt.
Hey Pheniox Transmissions is local for you just save up some money for a rebuild from them.
The other option is salvage yards or better yet upgrade the tranny.

I don't pay ANYONE to give me something I can do myself. I swapped out both axles, setup my own gears, mounted my own tires, built my own intermediate shaft, built every mount for the second Tcase..

I plan on rebuilding it myself. I've found a few kits for around 200 bucks. If that's what I have to do, then so be it. I've heard that Auto trannies are hard to rebuild, and that's just more incentive. All of this is just preparation for something further ahead in life. I think it was Nietsche that said "What does not kill us makes us stronger".

I'm not dead yet. smile

Well I would have done my transmission if it had broken down locally not 350 miles away from home.
It would have cost me $750 just to get it home and $650 to get a salvaged tranny and whatever labour and parts to do it myself. I thought that getting it rebuilt down there was going to cost almost the same price.
