Hey
Got a 96 nissan 4x4, V6, 5speed and I am getting really bad mileage like 12 mpg. I had a code for an 02 sensor and thought that was my problem so I replaced it. The check engine is now off but I am still getting crappy mileage. I checked the air filter and it's fine as well. The truck has normal power and doesn't seem to be lacking any. My temp gauge only ever reads a 1/4 way up, never gets near half. I replaced the theromstat but the gauge is still in the same place. The truck make great heat even with the gauge this low.
Anyone have any suggestion how come my mileage has gotten so bad? Thanks

WHen was it not crappy? REcent lift, bigger tires?

REplaced fluids in diffs or 5 speed and transfer, lately? Tho not likely a serious drag, it couldn't hurt. Make sure to use GL-4 in the trans, and use a qt over stock.

CAp, rotor, plugs, wires? Cat's not plugged?

nope no lift or tires on the truck, had a tranny issue and had it fixed but it was doing it before then that was a few months back. The truck wasn't getting used much till lately since the tranny wasn't fixed.

when chasing MPG, start with a complete tune up. Run the better parts. I use Bosch+4 plugs with beck/arnley-wires,cap,rotor, fuel filter.

My truck get 15-18mpg. If I'm dogging it it'll get 10-12.

hey,
Still chasing mileage, I used to get about 550kms or 330miles, to a tank and now I'm only getting about 70 miles less to a tank.

I have changed the o2 sensor, air filter, fuel filter, plugs, and the thermostat, rear brakes changed and check for sticking and I am still getting bad mileage?

Any more suggestions?

Check the temp sensor for the ECU. They typically have a two-wire yellow connector. The one for the guage is usuallly a single-wire.

If this is bad or disconnected, the ECU thinks the engine is cold and runs a richer mixture.

I am basing this on my knowledge of the earlier HBs. Yours may differ.

You might also try cleaning your MAF sensor. There is a write-up on it in the HOW TO forum on this board.

Look at the honeycomb on the cat's- make sure it's not plugged up.

had this happen to me-bad O-sensors can make motor run rich, clogging them up.
