I figured out quickly this job is not like my cars are. I found some writeups on how to remove the rotors for a 95 hardbody, but I need to know if its much different on my 85? I have manual locking hubs, which is a pain and makes me want to take it to a shop (but I dont want to pay labor). So, you have to remove the hub, and all the bearings a stuff. I understand to line this up in a row on paper towels to make reinstallation easier. But, am I going to need a hydrolic press for anything? does the knuckle have to come off the truck? it dosnt look like it.
Is there a good write up on this proceedure? Seems like Nissan made a design faux-pas with this rotor change and hub assembly. Way too hard for just break changes. ∙ 1997 BMW M3 Turbo- forged pistons/rods, GT35R turbo, etc, etc. ∙ 1985 Nissan 720 4x4 |

How to change the rotors
1)Remove manual or auto locking hubs. 2) Remove spindle lock nut 3)remove hub and rotor assemby 4)remove 6 bolts which secure hub to rotor 5)change out rotor. Make sure to use lock tight when reinstalling the bolts. 1995 KC XE-V6 4x4. |

yeah, I've got to do a break job this weekend too. I replaced the calipers and pads over the winter, but didn't want to do the rotors at the time (because I don't have a garage, and who wants to take their hub apart when it's 10 degrees out?).
I was driving down the road the other day and had to panic stop when some a**hole in an explorer pulled out in front of me (seriously, what kind of idiot pulls out in front of a small truck with a big trailer full of mulch?!). the next time I braked I heard a clunking sound from the passenger rotor. I got home (using mostly engine braking) and pulled the wheel off. turns out I overheated the rotor panic braking 2,000lbs of mulch and it cracked on me. I'm lucky it didn't frag, because it's cracked in a few spots, and one of them is all the way through one wall. and here's the kicker: It chewed up the almost-brand-new-not-even-5,000-miles-on-them pads. so it looks like my Saturday morning is booked. I'll post pictures of the job for people's future reference. nissan low res.jpg |

It's similar to the 95. After doing one side you'll be an expert.
After you remove the caliper, turn the rotor by hand and feel the tension it has. After you put it back together and you're tensioning the nut, try to tension it like before. Scientific, I know Repack the bearings too. An M3 with a turbo? Sounds dangerous Holy crap this is an old thread. |

ok, so I did my brakes this weekend. turns out my camera had dead batteries, which I didn't discover until I had my hands all greased up, so no pictures. sorry!
however, I'm going to post a detailed thread on it, so people can at least know what a mess they're getting into. nissan low res.jpg |
