hi
I have a 87 king cab 4x4 with a z24. I also have a rear diff from a 98 pathfinder laying around. I was wondering if the carrier out of the 98 path. would swap into mine? The paths rear diff has lsd. thanx isaque |

I believe you would be better off swapping the entire axle over, rather than just the third or just the carrier.
What axle do you have on your 87? Is it the C200? H180? H233B? I believe the later model Pathfinder has 33 spline shafts. Stan So this is where the AC/NOR members are hiding. |

i agree jsut swap the axle. it is easy to do. if you change the carriers you are going to have to measure the backlash and all that other stuff. if you dont you can prematurely wear out your gears.

Swapping the axle isnt' that easy...he'll have to cut off the coil perches and link arm mounts and weld on spring perches.
With a 4 banger, it's likely you have a C200 axle...these don't have a drop out 3rd member. If you do have an H233B with a drop out 3rd, the stud pattern is different on the '89 and older vs. the 90+ and the 3rds won't interchange. 1998 Frontier 4x4, 2002 Xterra 4x4, and Z28 street rocket Pass here and go on. 3rds are the same except for the stud pattern. You can get away either by removing the studs that don't line up, or having holes that don't get used, depending how you go.

ALL 31 spline H233B third members WILL bolt into all the 31 spline housings. Here's the differences:
'86.5 thru '89 have nine studs '90 thru '95.5 (maybe '96?) have 11 studs Seems like it won't fit right? Wrong! The parts number for the drop-out seal is the same. It has the 11 holes for the newer 3rd, but fits the older as well. To fit an '86.5 thru '89 third into a '90 thro '95 housing, simply remove 2 studs (it's pretty obvious when u put the two side by side). To fit a '90 thru '95 third into an '86.5 thru '89 housing, you will simply not use two holes that are in the forged 3rd member. My rear axle is in fact consisting of an '89 third with 5.14 gears and a Detroit, into my '93 housing. My truck is more '88 and '89 now than '93!
