I am planning on installing a lift kit that I purchased from Automotive Customizers this weekend. It is for an 1984 720 PU. Since this is my first time messing with suspension, I had assumed that everything I needed would come with the kit. As it turns out, the instructions say I need new shocks. I called Automotive Customizers to find out what kind of shocks I need, they said that they could sell me Rancho RS5000 shocks that would work, but I really don't want to wait for shipping. I found a place that sells the Rancho Shocks locally, but they don't show a size that will work with a 3" lift on the rear. A.C. wouldn't get me the part number so that I can get them locally, have any of you installed this same lift and know the part number for the rear shocks, or know of an alternate shock that would work?

Worst case scenario is that you could leave the stock shocks on there - just don't wheel the truck hard, as you'll probably over extend them, but they should be fine for normal street driving...that buys you time until AC can get shocks to you.

Or, get the Rancho part numbers that AC is willing to sell you and get the equivelent at a local shop. If the shop doesn't carry Ranchos, they may still have a cross reference guide and can get you something comparable.

Oh wait, I didn't read that they wouldn't give you the part number. Call them back and ask for Nissan Mike. He'll give you the part numbers.

Ok, I think i've got the solution here.. call the local offroad shop and find out what model RS5000 is specified to work with your STOCK (unlifted) suspension setup.

Or try going here to look up your application:

http://www.gorancho.com/documents/rs5000.pdf

Now go here to look up the specs on the stock shock:

http://www.gorancho.com/documents/specifications_1.pdf
http://www.gorancho.com/documents/specifications_2.pdf
http://www.gorancho.com/documents/specifications_3.pdf

The second one should have what you need. You just need to find a shock that has a 2-3" longer travel than your stock shock that also has the same end mounts as your stock shocks (they are listed in there).

Looking through the first file I posted, I think it is the RS5605 that is for your truck stock. That is listed for:

NISSAN TRUCK - Pickup Series 4 WD 77-97 FS

Not sure what the FS stands for though.

The mounting type is listed as: S33/S1 L1/EB1

Look through the specifications list. Any shock with that mounting type will bolt up to your truck. The only question now is if that part is for the front or rear. Any offroad shop will be able to look it up for you to give you an absolute part number.. then you can go from there to find longer shocks for the rear of the truck.

here we go.. here is the application guide.. shows you what shocks go to what year/make/model vehicles.
http://www.gorancho.com/documents/shocks.pdf

In STOCK configuration, your truck requires:

1983-1986 NISSAN TRUCK - 4 W.D.
Front: RS5605
Rear: RS5113

The fronts really wont need to be extended.. I would just put in the RS5605's there. The rear calls for 5113's stock, which have the following specs:

Mounting type: L1/EB1 L1/EB1
Compressed: 12.875"
Extended: 20.250"
Travel: 7.375"

You want to find something with approximately 24" extension to account for the lift, and extra flex you will get:

This one should work well:
RS5116: 24.000" extended (+3.75" over stock)

That one Even uses the same parts pack from Rancho as the RS5113, so it should bolt right up.

Thank You very much Datz & Desert Rat, I really appreciate the help!!!!! The lift is on now, the only thing hoding me back is that I need to re-index the torsion bars (I tightened them down as far as they can go and it still wasn't high enogh).. I think that I can do, it, I just need more time. Thanks again!!!
