I just got done changing the transmission fluid and x-case. I bought 7 qts of oil. Used 6 1/4 qt.

For the transmission the book states 7.76 pts. Which equals out to be 1.97 qts.

I put 3 qts in and the fluid was just below the fill hole. I added another quart to be safe.

The x-case took 2.5 qts. IS 80-90 fine for the x-case? Book called or ATF.

I went with 80-90. They had 75-90 but wanted $4.49. 80-90 was $3.22. I figured 80-90 was close enough and why waste 1.27 on the lighter weight. Transmission is shifting extremely smooth now. We’ll see how long it lasts.

The book said 1.97qt???? or is that your bad math?

it's around 3.9 qts. Add an extra- that would be 5 qts total.

And you did use GL-4, correct?

That would be my horrible math. Yes I used costal GL-4.

Today I changed the rear gear lube. Took almost 4 qts of oil.

Question- would LSD additive help the Detroit locker?

Tomorrow I will be changing the front axle fluid. Had to go and buy more oil. So fare the total is 17qts of fluid I've bought.

DAtz, and a few others have used GL-4 inthe T-case - lasts longer( stays more "lube-like") than the ATF. I think he said something like- "it poured out like water"( while draining ATF from the T-case).

That’s the main reason why I went with gear lube in the x-case. ATF is just insanely to thin. This will be my 2nd time changing the x-case. The atf was black, black and thin liquid.

So you added 4 qts- and the book calls out 4qts.

Don't the 87- 95 4x4 tmanual trans need an extra quart to keep the bearings from dieing early?

10-4! I burned a fresh change of ATF in the t-case in one week of hard wheeling.. it was burned, black, and was thin as water. I replaced it with 80w-90 gear oil and its been fine. Drained it for the first time in almost 2 years last week and it still looked good.

And just to clarify.. I used GL5 rated stuff in the T-case, as there are no synchros in it to ruin. GL4 is only needed for the manual transmissions. GL5 can be used everywhere else.

Since there actually are yellow metals in the rear portion of the t-case, I opted to play it safe and went GL4 in the t-case. MT-90 just like the Tranny. Pricey stuff, but it only takes two quarts.

It's a fine line between clever and stupid.
