I have come to the conclusion that I need to have my trans rebuilt. The guy at the shop told me 675.00 to pull it out tear it down put it back togather and install it. In addition I will pay for necessary parts to rebuild it. I will have the clutch done at the same time. When I asked him what it would cost if I pulled the trans he said 475.00 it hardly seems worth 200.00 to pull the trans myself. Any of you guys have opinions on these prices or sugestions.

Sounds reasonable to me. That job is a bitch on a 4wd, as you have to take down the torsion bars and everything. The extra $200 for them to do it isn't bad, provided you have the cash. It'll take you several hours to remove it and replace it, and it's a job that's much easier with a couple extra sets of hands. When we did my clutch there would have been no way that I could get the trans back into position and tighten bolts down by myself.

Clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing will set you back about $225 at a Napa store. Stay away from Centerforces, etc., as they don't last any longer than stock pieces.

That sounds about right. I paid $900.00 for a rebuild and new clutch and that's having them drop it. When I picked up my truck they said the next time they drop the tranny on a 4X4 they're gonna charge more big grin

Well my good deal turned bad to the tune of 2000.00 for a used trans. It seems there is a hole in the top of the case which let the fluid out which ruined the bearings. I just bought it less than a year ago. It looks like someone tried to fix it with epoxy. This really hurts because I have no returnable core for a reman, hence a used trans. I am really starting to dislike this truck.

there's a, i htink, late 80 pathfinder in a yard around here with a 5spd. they only want 90 for transmissions. i'm in utica, 2 hours from rochester. i can't guarantee that it's a good transmission but it might be worth the 90 to take a risk on it...if not i'm going to pull it one of these days as a spare, i have to swap mine in in about 2 weeks

Thnaks for cheking but I have decided to let the shop take care of it. I will lose out on quite a bit of money to get the truck back now without them finishing the job. I will never take another vehicle in for service, it's just not worth it.

Check this out. I get the truck back from the shop and its making a squeeling noise as if something is touching the drive shaft. The shop says that there is something on the end of the tail shaft that needs to center itself. He said when installing it doesn't align correctly and will just take a little time to settle in. I don't know 50 miles since last night when I picked it up and is still making noise I think its time to send it back in. Anybody heard of this?
