I mangled the Rear Drive Shaft on my '84 Nissan 720 going over a Rock retaining wall in my yard last weekend. I have already replaced it, but I am wondering if there is a "Skid Plate" or something that I can get to protect it in the future. Any ideas?

Bigger tires big grin Actually there's not a lot you can do because the shaft has to move freely.

You could have a beefy driveshaft made by High Angle Driveline. I saw a big Yota in Cali that was riding rocks with its driveshafts like they were rock sliders with no problems.

I dont know of an easy way to fit a skidplate around the driveshaft since it has to be free to move up and down with the suspension.

Thanks for the feedback! I had thought about seeing if I could get a stronger drive shaft, but I am concerned that it might cause damage to the Transfer case or Rear End rather than the Drive Shaft when I hit something with it. It is cheaper and easier to replace the shaft than either of the other things. I wonder if the Toyota had to beef up the input/output shafts/Connections on the Transfer Case and Rear end.

it would be easy to make a skid for it. Finda skid for the rear diff cover, then fabricate a unit that will directly bolt on to the diff so the skid move in conjunction of the driveshaft. Basically it would be like a c-shape skid (tucked underneath the shaft) going up the first two or three feet of the driveshaft.

GOT ANY BALLS??????????

I know that they make skid plates for the drive shaft. I think they move up and down with it, but my best advice is don't waste money on it and just try to avoid what would cause damage.
