What an ordeal.
I have learned my lesson. I bought 1 GL of Coastal 85W140 GL-4 gear lube. I chose to buy a cheep $4.00 gear lube pump(one that screws onto the bottle). Passing up the more expensive $10.00 pump.

I throw my truck on the lift. pop off the fill plug then I drop my oil. Not much magnetic dust on the magnet().

With the dinky pump the best I could get was about 2 Qt in before she ran below the pumps pick-up. So now I'm stuck. With a crappy pump and no easy way to fill her up. After hassle and hell got her back together.

Being a cheapskate made an easy job HARD.

Cost.
oil-$7.00+ tax
2pumps- 14.88+ tax

What I should have bought in the first place

$10.88 At Advance Auto, Checker, Schuck's, or Kragen

I've got the pump in the pick and it has worked ok except with thicker fluid (gear oil) the bottom (discharge) hose will blow out of the pump if I don't hold it place while I pump. The thicker fluid takes a lot of force to generate a decent delivery rate.

I ran into the same problem with a cheap auto zone hand pump. It was really cold outside and the thing just disintegrated.

On a side note, I don't know if you even need to use a straight GL4 gear lube (I don't know what you drive) but in the advance auto in NC where I used to live, the "GL4" was actually a GL4-GL5 lube. Just wanted to make sure you didn't have lube in there that would eat up your transmission.

I ran into problems finding GL-4 for our Manuel trannys. Can't find GL4 I finally found Gallon size 85W140 GL-3,GL-4,GL-5 at Autozone. I kept walking into auto part stores with no luck of GL-4. Almost every store manager told me GL5 covers GL4. Even had the store manger at NAPA say the same thing " GL-5 in an automotive application is as good as any gear lube". I said lets get out the book. his reply was "car manufactures put that in there to cover their own asses".

Would you said it's worth your money? Could there be a better solution?

As far as GL4, the first time I changed my tranny fluid I used GL4 made by Sta-lube. I don't remember where I bought it but I think they sell it at Harbor Freight. My truck immediatly became harder to shift into first but had no other problems until I started using "NEO" brand sythetic gear lube (sold by 4WP) that was supposted to be both GL4 and GL5 rated. I've now had Redline in it for a few years.

As far as lube transfer pumps. I went and bought one of those things that looks like a giant syringe made from grease gun parts. I havn't tried it yet but it should be easier to drain after use by hanging it upside down. I'm sure there is something better out there.

Easiest way to fill the trans is to remove the shifter. You can just pour the fluid in from the top.

Wait a minute here, you put 85W140 oil in the transmission. I'd think it would shift like absolute crap, it's supposed to have 75W90...

That weight wouldn't be bad in a hot climate like Florida.

Last time I did mine, ran a hose from the fill hole up to a funnel and poured it in from the top side under the hood...much faster than those pathetic little pumps.

No noticeable difference. hard shifts between 1-2 during the first 5 minutes of start up in the morning. Once the suns is out its all good.
