Ok, I just bought a CB radio on my way back from Woods Canyon and have a few questions about instalation. How can you get rid of the background noise when you turn on the truck? When the truck is off, its crystal clear. However, when I turn it on, I get static. Does it have to do with the gound?

It will depend on the ground and where your positive wire is hooked up. The best thing to do is hook them both to the battery, but that's not always the easiest way.

Also, make sure that the +, ground, and coax aren't real close to any of the trucks big wiring harnesses. I had a problem with bad static but solved it after a few days.

There is some sorta device that will cut the static but I forget where I saw it...

Hope that helps big grin

yeah, mine has some static too. Like Will said.. keep the coax away from all major wiring harnesses. I had to run mine down the middle of the back of my truck to get a halfway clean signal.

Also, its possible that your distributor cap or wires are worn and need to be replaced. Any place you have a spark discharge, it causes electrical interference.

I have also seen low pass filters for the power that will allow only the pure DC voltage through.. and block the high frequency signal from the ignition. This is only the power end though, so the antenna end may still recieve some interference.

Does the CB have an adjustable gain and squelch? On mine, i have to turn the gain halfway down to keep the interference from overwhelming the radio. Careful work of the squelch then will make it silent. We can play with the radio on the next run we do to see if we can clear it up.

Datz and Will, thanks for the info.

Datz, it will be nice to play around it on the next trip we have.

My problem could be that I have the CB mounted right underneath the stereo... I tookd pretty cool, but I guess I will need to work with the wiring a little more.

thanks again!

sergio, two things..... one, which was already mentioned, run the coax and power wire away from everything else pertaining to electrical as much as possible. 2ndly, run the power wire directly to the battery. This should get rid of the problem. If it continues to be a problem, then you can try grounding the chassis by running a wire from one of the bolts on the radio to another ground.

I had my old radio shack mounted below my radio with no problems... I think it's in the wiring. Good luck!
