Hello, I am new here but have found the site trying to find information on an engine swap. I have a wrecked 4x4 with a good driveline and a near mint condition 4x4 with a bad motor and no transmission/transfer case. The problem lies in the fact that the good truck is the z24 and the wrecked one is a 3.0.
Looking at the motors (they are both out of the trucks.) you can't tell there is much difference in wiring to the motor. However the mass airflow sensors have matching case numbers but differing numbers marked in white paint on the plastic case. The other difference is the v6 has some smog stuff on the side in place of the second coil which the z24 runs. I am not new to nissans (have and do have several) This is not my first engine swap, however this is the first one to be changing engine types. I have done 2 motor swaps in nissans (about 6 in chevys and race cars) but they were both z24 to z24. So my knowledge level is not nearly a master but definitely not a noob. My questions then are: can I drop any of the smog stuff (it is not required here and I do plan on a few different changes to the engine to lower the emissions anyway) and do I need to swap the harnesses? Or does anyone know anybody that has done a similar swap that I can pick the brain of?

The 4 banger trans and Tcase wouldn't work in the V6 swap anyways, so you're OK there. Take it all over to the other truck as a single unit and drop her in.

You'll need to swap wiring harnesses and the ECUs. With regard to smog stuff...I don't know where you live and what requirements you have there for inspections and what not, but removing that stuff isn't going to give you significant power gains, and you'll also be throwing codes without it all.

Otherwise since you have both trucks, you should just about have all the parts you need.

Thanks for the quick response. I will be working on it over the next few days.
This gives me a reason to take the dash along so that I can have a tach in the new truck anyway. Thanks again.

I kinda feel like an idiot for forgetting the most important difference between the two trucks besides the motor. The four cylinder has A/C the six does not. I did talk to the parts store and they claim its the same compressor but something is different (whether it was the clutch or what they are not sure.) I do know that on the 3.0 the alternator mounts where the compressor goes on the 4 cyl. So.... my question this time is... Where does the compressor go on the v6? I plan on buying the new compressor but I may need to find the bracket to mount it. Does anyone have a picture or could anyone get a picture of the v6 with a/c installed so that I can get a better idea of what the motor looks like when its installed? Sorry for the trouble but I have been a chevy man with an addiction to the hardbody's since high school (when I bought my first one wrecked and my dad and I fixed it up.) I really can't wait to get this truck done but I want to do it 100% right. And since the truck is plumbed for a/c may as well use it, right?
My next project actually may be a SBC hardbody if I can find a body with a bad motor cheap enough just cause it would be cool. If I get a chance I may try posting a few pics up on my webserver so that I can show y'all what I am dealing with here. Thanks for the help in advance.

So are there any 6 cyl's out there with A/C or is that an option that wasn't offered? Just wondering here.

In the 80's some base model hardbodies did not receive a/c. Nissan did make a/c standard on all models somewhere in the hardbody run. I think it was around the 89-90 turn over. Yes every v-6 hardbody I've seen had a a/c compressor installed. Both VG30I and VG30E engines.

on the v6 the a/c compressor is located at the top left(drivers) of the engine. The a/c compressor is located in the same position on the VG30I, VG30E,Vg33E.

I don't have a digi camera right now to take pics for you.

Well the new truck is a 92 and the old one is an 89 so here is hoping that I can find a bracket to mount that puppy. This is going to be one heck of a mutant when its done. I do have the wiring harnesses pulled from both but the getting the wires back thru all the firewall holes is proving to be more of a project than planned and things keep coming up in other places that keep me out of the shop and away from the truck so work is going a little slower than planned. But progress is being made. Thanks for the help you guys are great.

Has anybody here ordered anything off of the mynissanpartstore.com website?

http://mynissanpartstore.com/

They claim to have the bracket that I am looking for and cheaper than the dealer price as well.

I haven't, If I order dealer parts it's from one of N4W sponsors. I once ordered a Nissan muffler from a online OEM Nissan parts site like linked. I got a e-mail back stating that they couldn't order the part because Nissan no longer manufactures it.

Whats listed in the online inventory isn't always available. I would call and make sure they are able to order the part. Especially for old model rare parts.

Kind of what I was thinking as well. I don't want to get stiffed on this stuff and its one of those things that I would rather go thru a dealer anyway. Do the sponsors ship anywhere in the US? I wouldn't mind ordering thru one of the sponsors since the site has been very helpful and seems like everyone here is pretty cool.
