What would it take to put in a Limited slip rear end in my '87 short wheel drive 4x4 w/z24? I'm really used to the limited slip on my Miata and getting 'stuck' in a flat parking lot is not cool with my truck. I am totaly green to the whole, buying rear end parts, so I don't even know where to start looking. Is there some used parts that I can swap in?
I had one in my C200. I bought it from 4x4parts.com, as DR suggested. I modified it to work in my R2oo front axle when I went to an H233B.
It is a pretty simple part swap and it works very well IMHO. I replaced gears at the same time, so mine was a bit of a project, but just swapping the carriers should be straight forward.
You WILL have to either press new bearings on, or have a shop press your existing bearings off and then press them onto the new carrier.
You MAY have to shim the carrier side to side to adjust backlash. As long as you use the same gear set, that is the only adjustment that you will have to be concerned about.
Sorry to steal your thread Marvout, but if I've got the H233b in my '93 and from what I gather that should be the 31 spline? If I were to steal the LSD unit (housing and all) off a pathfinder it would just bolt up to my existing axle right?
Would it be worth doing the swap? I read the 31 vs. 33 spline LSDs had different break torques, but can't remember which was better. Thanks!
What you propose to do should work. An LSD is better than an open diff any day of the week. If you can't afford a locker, or use it in snow, that is a good way to go.
You have 31 splines. The 31 spline is the good one.
