I'm in Mexico and found a dana 44 front axle for my truck. I'm currently having it installed with coils.
I need two things, a carrier for high gears and the gears to match the rear axle which I believe is 4.625 ratio. Any ideas on what I need and where I can get them at an affordable price? I've also read that you can use the existing carrier (with 2.70 gears) and use the "thick" gears so you don't have to change your carrier. Thanks for the help! Try ebay, get a number 4 carrier, or better yet get some kind of locker, at least a lockrite for the open carrier. Gears are on ebay too at good prices. One guy called http://www.completeoffroad.com is on there. Thick gears are on there too right now check the words "dana 44" and you will see everything.

The carrier is only $50 new from completeoffroad.com Thats where I got mine.
If you have an Auto in your 97 KC you should have 4.6, You can get 4.56 for the Dana and be close enough. Barry 93 D21 King Cab SE - 35s, SAS + stuff 92 Pathfinder SE - Auto SAS 3 link 04 Quest SE - stock, perfect!!! |

Are there any disadvantages to running the thick gears? I am thinking about it, but I doubt it will save any money, just wondering if there are any reasons to avoid them.

The gears are heavier. Probaly not a big issue in the front. But I noticed theres lots of LIGHTENED gears sets on the market now.
The thick gears require all new ring bolts. 1.99 each, drilling the carrier and cost more. 30-50 dollars more. Thats why I bought a new carrier. Reg geras can be $99-$109 on ebay (new). Barry 93 D21 King Cab SE - 35s, SAS + stuff 92 Pathfinder SE - Auto SAS 3 link 04 Quest SE - stock, perfect!!! |

bite the bullet and buy an ARB locker for the front....that solves your carrier issues.
4.56 / 4.625 is the closest match with stock gears, and IMHO, that's not quite close enough. Since you're in Mexico, hit some yards and see if you can find an HB with 4.88 gears in the rear and swap 3rds. 1998 Frontier 4x4, 2002 Xterra 4x4, and Z28 street rocket Pass here and go on. I bought the #4 carier for 50 bucks. Also, for now I'll leave the truck with 4.56/4.625 and later on I will upgrade both to 5.11/5.12 and run 35's.
I also bought the 5.5" lift springs for a ford ranger. Those will work nice for the front. The truck should be ready by Friday. I'll send pics and we need to go out when I get back to arizona. "Even if you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there." - Words of Wisdom |

Thanks Andy,
I think I'm going to go with an OX locker. Like I said in my other thread, I might just swap the rear d44 and use 5.38 gears with 35" tires. It's all to confusing right now. Trying to decide. "Even if you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there." - Words of Wisdom |
