When driving to and from work I've noticed my truck drinking fuel like a hummer. I haven’t been monitoring my MPG, I monitor my gas gauge. Usually I can drive to and from work 3-4 days on a 1/4 tank of gas. 8 trips at about 4-5 miles each way. The past couple of weeks it's been half a tank of gas to get me to and from work.

To day I went to the mall 7-8 miles from my home. From the mall I went to the beach. Another 11 miles. From the beach I went home. 3 miles from the beach to my apartment.

1/4 a tank of gas seems a little much for today’s driving. My truck is in top notch shape. Bosch+4 plugs, beck/arnley wires, hatchi cap and rotor. Just installed a new air filter. Fuel filter was replaced summer of 06.

I'm wondering if it's time to clean my maf?

Probably so. In fact, in the time it took you to type and spellcheck your post, you could have been halfway done cleaning it. Wink

Have you calculated your actual mpg? Does it smell like it is running rich?

Smile I was more less thinking about just replacing the whole unit.

I haven’t calculated my actual mpg. No the truck has not been running rich. The exhaust is always colorless. Tomorrow I'll pull a plug and look at the color.

The whole unit is a dealer-only item and runs in the neighborhood of $300.

They rarely go bad. They just need occasional cleaning.

Mass Air Flow sensor. Look it up in your service manual to see where it is located.

When was the last time the O2 sensor was replaced? They are supposed to be replaced approximately every 60,000 miles.

FWIW, the MAF sensor is only used to meter fuel below ~2800 rpm. The 02 sensor is used above 2800 in closed loop to keep the mixture optimal.

If you havent replaced the O2 in a long time, it might be worth it. I'll be replacing mine (have about 70,000 miles on my most recent one) as I've noticed that my fuel economy has gone way down lately.

I'm having similar issues as lordBiotre is have. How much do o2 sensors usually cost? Hard to replace?

Also I want to do that sea-foam treatment that DR posted up a month or so ago. Any ideas how much that whole treatment should cost if i do it myself?

The seafoam is around $10-15 for everything. Works fairly well too.

An O2 sensor will run around $80. Check at Autozone and checker to see what they have. You can shop online first with checker/Autozone, print out the price, and typically get a lower price in store. Wink

They aren't hard to change. You'll need a big wrench though or big adjustable wrench.

Don't be the ones on the exhaust, don't be the ones on the exhaust, ...

You can almost see the one on the left up front where the red wire leads down into the exhaust. The one on the right is at the lower end of the blue wire. Blot/block the PB Blaster from the cat or the truck will run stinky for days. You can reach past stuff to replace them. I wish I had done it when I had them out, D'Oh!
