Crank it hard to either the left or the right (almost all the way but do not deadhead it). IF you ARE engaged, it will not go unless you hit the gas.

while in 2WD and your hubs are locked in your truck will have a not-normal pull.

It's best to lock-unlock auto hubs once a moth. Keeps them in operating conduction. Grease them regularly.

Most 4x4 hardbody trucks came with automatic locking hubs. Some had manual locking hubs out the box(rare).

Looks at your front wheels It'll say automatic. If it's manual it will have a turn lever.

It does have a turn lever, but i was wondering if i left it in 2 wheel drive, then shifted the gearbox into 4wd, if that would "auto-lock" them?

If the hubs are unlocked and your are in 4wd there will be no power to the wheels.

If the hubs are locked and you are in 2wd everything up front will be turning= bad for street.

If you can turn the halfshaft without the wheel turning, that would be unlocked.

It's a fine line between clever and stupid.
