the distributor will be your limit. It will also depend on how fast you go.

I would not suggest anything over 1.5 FT or .5 meter.

How deep you can " physically" go has nothing to do w/ maintenance chores afterwards Razz... rebuilding brakes, regreasing hubs, changing fluids in your differentials, transmission/ transfercase......

I can go 'waist deep', in my Titan, with no snorkel... (about 3 ft)
never had any issues... but, it is a totally different truck than the hardbody...

but like Hillbille said, the aftermath or clean-up is tedious and extensive...

there's always one sure fire way to find out... dip in till it cuts off, and get out and measure the depth... hehehe (wouldn't necessarily advise that, but....)

I've had water go over the hood while crossing a stream and didn't have any problems. after installing the snorkle i went through a pond, well tryed to cross a pond, got waist dip sitting in the truck. It died cuz of the computer is under the seat. I siliconed the distibutor cap and all tubes that lead to the intake to snorkle.

stock niisan intake runs from carb to the can under hood then to inside front fender wall. alteast on my 97.

I've got video of the trip through pond on myspace.com/rbarse27 if you want to check it out

not going with sas. atleast not right now.

The breathe tubes for the front diff and manual tranny are high on the firewall, but the breather tube for the rear axle is just under the bed floor.
The shifter boot, where the shifter seals to the top of the tranny, often dries out and cracks, allowing water in the tranny.

As stated, the ECM is under the passenger seat.

Water can also get into the bell housing, possibly messing up your clutch and throw out bearing.

All that being said, I would avoid water deeper than the rocker panels. Even then, only a brief trip.

It's a fine line between clever and stupid.

I want to thank you all for the info, that I found very ilustrative.

I learned more than I expected, like the diff and tranny breathers and the location of the ECM, not to mention the "how to" to find my top depth Big Grin

I would suggest you can go as deep as the fan blades, because they can get damaged by deep water (ask me how i know this). My 720 Nissan filled the cab and the tranny with water but it didn't get stuck. But it was in very deep water for far too long.
Unless you're talking water crossings in which you are in and out, and you keep moving, letting the rig push the water out of your way (so to speak). in that situation you may be okay going deeper.
also, keep the water out of the alternator at all costs. ask me how i know.

Yup, the distributor is a bigger problem than the intake. I have a VG30i in my WD21, and I've stalled the thing in water at headlight level. As soon as the mechanical fan hits water, it soaks the entire engine, including the distributor that's right at the front.

If you're shooting for something that can do deep water, put in an electric fan that you can shut down before you hit it, or build some kind of shield over the distributor. Personally, I wouldn't silicone the distributor together because that leads to a huge pain in the ass if you have to get in there, but others disagree.

I don't know if the 4 cylinder has the same problem, but an e-fan is a wise modification to avoid hosing down your engine (or breaking fan blades) anyway.

I've had water lapping on the windshield for a few seconds. My distributor was sealed up well at the time. No problems somehow. The door seals were also in good shape Wink

if you like water crossings go for them. However it's best if you follow what res stated. Any water higher then your rocker panels or rock sliders is unsafe.

I would never go any deeper than the hood. Even then I would expect a lot of problems to arise afterwards.
