Just curious as to whether or not a tranny cooler is needed for an automatic 2004 X?

I don't think one is needed but it couldn't hurt. I plan on putting one on my wifes 03 just because we do haul stuff from time to time on a 8x10 trailer. I have also towed a camry via car dolley with it(took it out of OD and it does fine) Eventually going to get a gauge and tap it into the bellhousing somewhere just to be sure.
I had a gauge on my 3/4 chevy and it was very handy to keep an eye on the 700r4 as it would get really hot on some of the bigger mountain passes hauling my Nissan down here from Kansas. So if you ever plan to tow or even just cruize the beach I don't see how it could hurt. Heat is the leading cause of failure on A/T. ... As any vehicle gets older it will reach a point where things will start to over heat. http://groups.msn.com/NISSAN4X4TRAILS/nissantech.msnw?a...view=1&ID_Message=63 ... The compression of liquids and gases create heat in them in relation to the power that was required to compress them. All the power delivered the wheels of the modern 4x4 trucks with an automatic transmission is passed through a hydraulic torque converter. The conversion of engine torque from the driving half of the converter to the driven half is, in its own form, a compressor. Items such as the servos, clutches and bands, when under a load, add much to the heat of the torque converter. ... The life of the transmission relies on the life of the oil and the additives in the oil. Excessive heat ruins the additives in the oil and in turn will ruin the transmission.. The oil cooling cores in the radiators of many modern vehicles are operating at temperatures over two hundred degrees and are being taxed to handle the added heat of the transmission. ... Add on coolers can and should be used in series or parallel with the cooling core in the radiator because cold oil does not work well in the transmission. Add on coolers can be used as before or after coolers when used with factory radiator coolers. The job of the add on cooler is to help dissipate heat but why put this additional heat in front of the radiator and the air conditioning condenser? ... If the transmission is going to over heat the odds are that the engine is going to be running very warm. There are places where add on pre-coolers can be mounted besides in front of the radiator and away from hot exhaust systems. It does not require a lot of air flow to make a pre-cooler quite effective. Have a good one '99 4x4 3.3 KC & '04 Sentra 1.8s '99 4x4 4.7 WJ & '76 4x4 FSJ 401 |

It definitely wouldnt hurt.. Its good insurance to protect your transmission. The longer they are forced to run warm, the shorter their lifespan.
I put a 12,500lb motorhome cooler on my Pathy.. I guarantee that Nissan never put anything like this on any of our trucks. My transmission hasnt overheated since. |
