ok, the manual for my new x says the capacity with filter changer is 5 3/8 qt's. i guess i'm wondering if i could simplify thn=ings and go for an even 5 qt's or 5.5. any suggestions???

Are you serious? Just guesstimate it, a bit less than 5.5 and it's good enough, though 5.5 certainly wouldn't hurt. I wouldn't skimp back to an even 5 though, that's just foolish.

Go by the dipstick reading and check it every few tanks- adjust accordingly if needed.

5 qts should be fine. if the dip stick is low ad a little more.

If you're changing the oil at one of the oil change businesses, their bulk oil dispensers are usually dialed in. So, if the book says 5 3/8, then they can add that amount. As the other folks described though, using canned oil you probably have to open up 6 cans (5 and a partial) to get it to the specification amount.

Kind of like the VG33E that takes 3.5 quarts. I keep the last 1/2 quart around for the next oil change, then only by 3 new bottles. You could buy 6 the first time, 5 the next, then 6 again, etc. The bottles have graduation marks on the sides of them so you can see how much you are putting in.
