Not sure what Nissan was thinking when they designed the roof rack by not putting ribs on the roof to keep cargo off the paint, but has anyone used no slip tape or anything else on the roof to prevent cargo from scratching the hell out of the paint? Seems to me that'd work pretty well, but not sure how it would hold up in the AZ sun.

I'm going to let you think about this post you made for a few minutes wink

While you are thinking about it I will relay some insight I have regarding your problem.

Since the Wife and I are shopping AWD cars to replace the Villager, we have been to the Audio dealership checking out the Allroad Quattro's.

The Allroads come standard with a roof rack system which is fairly cool, the cool thing (too me) is tha they paint the roof an alternate flat color to hide scratches that will occur when you lay your cargo on the roof surface in real use.

This is going to be my solution when I install the safari rack on the Frontier.

So Mr. Herculiner, I think you can come up with an alternate solution to some chessy rubber strips glued onto the Xterra roof big grin

If memory serves, I believe Xterra-parts sells those cheesy rubber adhesive strips for people who are too chicken to Herculine the roof of their Xterra to prevent scratches.

Somebody has commented on the rubber strip things in a XOC forum recently, I believe its Brent who quotes the cost from Nissan at $18.00

I thought about that...I also thought about the fact I'd have to do some serious masking to keep from getting the crap all over while on the roof. I think now I'll think about it harder.

I was thinking that no slip tape you use on running boards, boats, etc....but herculiner would definitely be the more permanent solution - just more effort to apply.

Just remove the rack first.

That should allow you plenty of access to the roof to prevent a huge mess.

While you have the rack off you can paint it or replace it with a Calmini full replacement rack

I knew it! I knew sooner or later Herculiner would make its way onto the new X. big grin

Now after that, you'll just need a lift, lockers, some mud tires.. and skidplates..

and...

Yes, I have the $18 rubber strip kit. It has served me well, at least as far as throwing my spare directly on the roof between the cross bars.
