Is someone can tell me more about the Limited Slip Rear Differential on the XTerra?
How does it works? when? 2WD, 4WD, Low gear?
Don't need scientific answers...

Are other Nissan SUVs have this feature?
Thank you.

I have it in my Pathfinder and it works well. It might not be the exact same thing as yours so I couldn't tell you how it works.

But, just as long as you have two tires on the ground(in the back) and one of them has some traction, the truck will still move. If one comes off the ground or looses traction, foward progress will pretty much stop.

The advantahe of LSD over standard "Open" diffs is that an open diff just doesn't do as well. Go figure...

If you want more traction, you can buy a "locker" which will send 50% of the available engine power to each rear tire, no matter is that tire is on the ground or in the air.

Also, the LSD works all the time, in 2wd, 4hi, 4lo.

Welcome to the board Big Grin

Works always since it is in the rear, I believe Pathys also have LSD in the rear, Frontiers as well. The Titan will alledgedly have an LSD with a E-Locker in the rear.

Rear LSD is a factory option in all Nissans. Later versions are pretty weak. They can be rebuilt with additional clutch discs to "tighten" them up and make them function more like a spool, but it's only been done on a couple and I can't get them to reveal any secrets Smile

What do you want to know? I have access to the two guys in Utah who did it, I am sure they will tell you anything DR. Only issue I have seen with the fakey Spool system is the tire wear, but hey what the hell is your 4x4 doing at the mall anyway?

Andy, get those guys to post over here! Todd has posted. What's Michael's screen name on xoc?

That is such a great mod, and gives you the effect of a locker for well under $100! Just need to know how to get the clutch discs.

I don't believe Mike has an XOC screen name but his screen name on the www.uxoc.org forum is Weelit.

The mod basically consists of unbolting the driveshaft, pulling the axles, removing the third member, unbolt the bearing caps, remove the diff, removing the ring gear, split the diff case, remove the friction plate retaining clips(they no longer fit with the extra disc)put a new friction disc in each side bolt it back together. Check and or adjust the backlash, run a pattern, bolt it all back together, and fill up the gear oil.

You need some rear end knowledge (not that kind of rear end Wink) to do it but a decent mechanic with some time on his hands can accomplish it.

As far as the friction disc part numbers, I don't know those. Mike attained the parts for me.

Tire wear will be an issue because it is now just a complicated spool Big Grin or fused spool as I like to call it. lol

You da man Todd!!! Thanks. If we can get these part #'s, we'll be set. Several of us have played with differentials, and we have friends who have set up many diffs.

John, I'd DEFINITELY consider this for yours. Mike said it cost him $50 in parts and the damn things chirp on pavement because it's locked up solid. Not great for a DD, but awesome in the dirt.

I really wish I hadn't sold my LSD carrier now.

After doing some research and looking over the diagram of the WD22 rear final drive (which I can scan/post if needed?) the disc part number is #38433 I believe. I ordered two of them for ~ $25 each, one for each side of the spider gears like Mike told me at GONE.

Basically there are 6 friction plates and 6 discs on each side in the stock LSD with the friction disc spring/ retainer clip on each end. This mods adds two more disc but no more plates, does it matter if the additional discs are at the beginning, end or some other place in the stack?

I let you know how it works out in my X Smile I was impressed with TK1's and Weelit’s traction advantage at GONE, so thanks to those guys for the initial pioneering effort. Chug

Any other tips, install or otherwise TK1?

Brian

Good find Brian! This is great info. You will have to have your diff setup again to set backlash, etc. You coud probably do the LSD yourself, but take it to a shop for reassembly unless you have the experience on setting up diffs.
