maybe i should clarify the comment more. has to be a 4 spider rear end bolt together actually looks like a lsd but larger side gears . the only diff in the lsd for 31 or 33 splines is the side gears..now does that make sense to you..??

Well, see Daviena took the X on it's maiden voyage yesterday and did Coke Ovens and Battleaxe. She did really good to (scary), so, I'll likely be putting a few mods on it as time goes on. A locker cheaper than an ARB sounds really good for some reason Smile

Yah, my bad. I figured out today that the clutch discs/plates from a 31-spline LSD are identical to the 33-spline, though the spring plates/discs are different. On the older LSDs, the spring parts are a splined disc and plate just like the rest of the pack but they're bowed so that they provide a spring force when they're squashed inside the case. On the later ones, they use non-splined, non-tabbed/notched bowed discs, pretty much large dished washers. I wonder if the fact that the earlier ones are splined accounts for the significant difference in factory breakaway torque on the older LSDs versus the newer ones. Might not need to add any extra discs/plates at all, just swap the older splined versions instead of the smooth ones...

Hahahaha so you bought that thing open just so you would have traction problems, and be able to say "honey, it needs a locker"

She's the one driving it. Plus, the LSD in these things is a worthless waste of money unless you do the disc addition, and that causes tire chirping and all kinds of neat stuff on pavement. OK for a weekend warrior, not so good for our Hockey hauler.

I ended up swapping the early-style keyed spring disc and spring plate out in place of my original non-keyed ones. Originals on the left, early-style on the right:

The fact that the spring components of the earlier diffs were keyed to engage the carrier and side gear like the rest of the stack means that their surface area contributes friction, not just pressure, to the stack, making for a higher breakaway torque than the pressure-only ones. This is the setup used in the 31-spline LSDs which are rated for 260-289 ft-lbs. vs. the 139-180 ft-lbs. of my original setup (and far less on 03+ diffs).

Part numbers needed to do the swap:
38435-C6010 x2
38436-C6000 x2
38439-C6001 x4

Total cost is ~100, but unless your LSD is comprised of a fully-alternating stack of plates and discs (not mostly plates, or worse, with spacers) as shown below, it's not worth it.
