Im just gonna post the link to my photobucket album for now. Im gonna work on the write up and parts list this weekend. I want to know what you think, and if youd be interested in seeing a write up (It would be partly WD21 specific, but most would transfer to other vehicles also)
E-Fan Photobucket Album What do you think? Pictures are slightly confusing as first glance, but if you look for a second or two at each pic, you can tell what they are. Not all of those pics will be in the write up. Some are just for my own records. And each pic in the write up will be captioned. ALSO, anyone attempting this mod, I strongly STRONGLY recommend you upgrade your charging system first. Either do the Quest alt swap, or buy one from AC, and combine the good alt with a good battery. This fan puts a HUGE load on the alt and battery. Enough that I can feel it in the driveline. Daniel 1999 Frontier XE 2WD I4 AUTO - RIP sold 11/01/05 1994 Pathy XE 4WD V6 5 SPD - Bought 1/29/06 |

Nice!! So, does it cool just a little better now?

Ponder this, Daniel: You feel the draw on the engine when the fan kicks in. You never felt that draw with the mechanical fan.....because it was nearly constant.
Do you track your fuel milage? I am curious to see how it is affected. By the way, I tested mine on a Stewart-Warner 30A range ammeter. It went off the scale on start-up, then settled to 25A continuous. What size breaker did you buy? |

It cools so much better that even idling in my driveway the fan only kicks on for about 15-20 seconds, then turns off again. And while Im driving the temp gauge stays at about 1/3. Not ideal, but it was like 2am and it wasnt hot outside.
And Res, thats a possibility, but I doubt it would have kicked this hard even if you added it all up. I wish I could show you guys, but its something you have to see to believe. Well, youre welcome to come by and take a look. Anyone that wants to take a look can pm me and Ill give em directions to come see it. I dont track my mileage. I have some numbers from when I used to, so I can compare to those, but no recent numbers. The breaker is 30A, I ran it for 15 minutes with no problems. And I switched it on/off/on/off/etc. a bunch of times and it had no problems. Worked fine. Daniel 1999 Frontier XE 2WD I4 AUTO - RIP sold 11/01/05 1994 Pathy XE 4WD V6 5 SPD - Bought 1/29/06 |

Alright, heres a preliminary list. I might add more as I remember it. Im gonna write up the list for what I used. Im just gonna assume that you are gonna wire it up the same way.
- Roll of 10ga red wire - Roll of 10ga black wire - Roll of 14-16ga red wire - One 30a relay - One 30a circuit breaker - One universal ford solenoid (Not really necessary, but I feel safer) - One adjustable fan controller (the one I used is here) - One universal electric fan mounting kit (I got mine from Checker, it was like $5. Its the push tabs that go through the core) - One 3 way (on/off/on) switch (Again, got it from Checker, was a 20a heavy duty switch) - A few zip ties - A pack of a bunch of connectors and a few larger rings for the battery/circuit breaker/solenoid connections - Wire cutters - Angle grinder - Few random hand tools - Drill and/or self-tapping screws - A few random bolts with washers and nuts - Soldering gun and solder - Some electrical know how Daniel 1999 Frontier XE 2WD I4 AUTO - RIP sold 11/01/05 1994 Pathy XE 4WD V6 5 SPD - Bought 1/29/06 |

I simplified it a bit. I left out the relay from the AC trigger wire and used a common ol' rectifier diode in line. Simple and solid state.
Those fans seem to work fine on a standard 40A cube relay. I bought a Ford solenoid, but didn't use it. I didn't run wires into the cab for kill switches, etc. due to time constraints. Everything is in the engine compartment. I pulled switched power from the harness that feeds the relays on the passenger fender. I think it was a 14 GA black w/ ? stripe. AC trigger wire had to run around the firewall and fenders. Not the shortest route, but the easiest for me. More good news. I found a less expensive fan control at VAutozone. It is adjustable and simply acts as a on/off switch, having only two terminals. It looks very similar to the Flex-A-Lite controller. It is a TorqFlo #733653 and sells for $17.99. AZ number is 267187. I might add that it DOES NOT come with instructions. I went by the Flex-A-Lite online instructions to see how to mount the probe. Did I mention that I installed my SWANKy fan this afternoon? The fan clutch would not engage anymore, so I took off the front half which gave me enough room to get the e-fan in there. The thing works great! I could tell when it kicked in during idle, but that was the only time. I did NOT feel it in the drivetrain, like you had mentioned. If you left out the relay from the AC trigger, the thermostat will kick in the AC compresser, which you WILL feel. Just a thought. |

Update 1:
I had to upgrade my alternator to a 94 amp GM unit to keep up with the additional drain created by this mucho grande fan. Also to help with winching. Update 2: I developed a starting problem. When I tried to restart the truck (warmed-up) It would only click while the fan was getting up to speed. To cure this I moved my switched 12v power (the one that feeds the relay via the thermostatic controller) to the radio power circuit. This was done because that circuit cuts off when the ignition switch is turned all the way to "start". I could have used other circuits to accomplish my goal, but the radio circuit was the easiest to access on my truck. I have not had that starting problem since. |

I have run into the same problem with the charging system. In the process of obtaining a quest alternator to swap.
I used the cigarette lighter lpug (seeing as I dont smoke, and I have a 3 outlet adapter wired to the battery, I dont think Ill be needing it) so it does the same thing as the radio circuit that res used. Also, my fan is rarely on upon startup, so I dont think Ill have an issue here. Daniel 1999 Frontier XE 2WD I4 AUTO - RIP sold 11/01/05 1994 Pathy XE 4WD V6 5 SPD - Bought 1/29/06 |

I've started to work on my fan swap too... Looks like a ALT swap is what I will be doing.. Where did you get yours and how much? I just might go for the AC Mean Green.. with all the Stereo AMP's, power inverters, and Lighting I have on this rig, it's going to need it.. -- MattMan555 -- "I'm not a big black man, but I do play one on TV" << 2000 Nissan X >> <<A lift and big tires >> |

I ended up using a solenoid that looks like a Ford starter solenoid, but it is rated for CONTINUOUS DUTY.
There is a difference. Standard ones did not hold up. The continuous duty one was about $35. Money well spent. I went through a little black relay and two different starter solenoids. I would have been money ahead if I had known about the "continuous" part sooner. |

Do you have the part number on it or a Pic? Greg - Unless a bag of money falls out of the sky in the ammount of $5200 for the truck until then I'm keeping it... -- MattMan555 -- "I'm not a big black man, but I do play one on TV" << 2000 Nissan X >> <<A lift and big tires >> |

I bought it at Car Quest. I walked in and explained what I wanted and what I wanted it for and the dude was familiar with it.
I will look for the receipt and post a P/N if I have it. Another note: Run the power (for the thrmostat) to a fused circuit that cuts out when the starter is cranking. I used the radio fuse. That way the fan cuts off while cranking. It helps. **Update** CarQuest # is EC SS-608 SOLENOID Sorry, but I didn't save the box, so I don't have a brand name. |
