Matt, I like that way a lot better. I'll be ordering that system for sure.

I see some undesirable things in the Hayden setup.
The SWANKy fan runs at 25Amps. It spikes to over 35 (off my ammeter)upon startup. That is borderline for the 40A relay that is integrated into the Hayden unit.
If the relay melts a tab like mine did, it might ruin the whole thing. It also limits you to that type of relay.

It is a tread-in temp sender. Where will you thread it into?

I ended up with a $17 adjustable thermostat that uses a radiator probe and a $5 electric fan attachment kit, both from AutoZone. A $35 continuous-duty starter solenoid from CarQuest. Some assorted 10 AWG and 16 AWG wire that I had laying around from other projects. A small rectifier diode from Radio Shack 60¢.

Total cost, not counting the other solenoids and relay that I fried, was under $55.00.

Ask and ye shall receive. Smile
This is my actual circuit with the exception of the 30 amp curcuit breaker. I have yet to add it. Daniel has been using one, though.
I'm sure you will have questions about the diagram, so ask away.

Thanks for posting your schematic... I fully understand it... and will be posting mine up soon..

I was able to get all the parts from Auto-zone... Here are the part I choose.. I choose a bit more complex route but am still going to use your Solenoid idea.

Electric Fan Mount Kit by TorqFlo # 900210 $5
Adjustable Electric Fan Controler by TorqFlo # 733647 $35
Durlast Starter Solenoid # F492 $9

Thanks!!

Green would go to the a/c clutch engagement wire. Its the only wire going to the a/c compressor. Yellow would go to your choice of ignition source. I ran mine off of the cigarette lighter, Res ran his from the radio. That wire could also go to your switch, so you can choose auto/on/off. Thats how mine is wired with a less complex controller though.

Yes. It keeps the positive run very short and safe.
The ground wire runs through the solenoid to the chassis ground.

The only positive connection on my solenoid is the trigger wires from the thermo switch and A/C compressor. These run to the "I" terminal.
The "S" terminal gets a jumper to the chassis ground.

Mattman, If you use the green wire to the A/C compressor, you won't need the diode that I used in my diagram because it is built into the $35 thingy.

If the solenoid is not rated for "continuous duty", you are wasting $9. It could cost more if it quits and causes an overheat. That's what happened to me. Just my 2¢

E-Fan Photobucket Album

What do you think? Pictures are slightly confusing as first glance, but if you look for a second or two at each pic, you can tell what they are. Not all of those pics will be in the write up. Some are just for my own records. And each pic in the write up will be captioned.

ALSO, anyone attempting this mod, I strongly STRONGLY recommend you upgrade your charging system first. Either do the Quest alt swap, or buy one from AC, and combine the good alt with a good battery. This fan puts a HUGE load on the alt and battery. Enough that I can feel it in the driveline.

OK, I'm having a problem with this analysis. The Flex-a-Lite 30 has less than a 10 amp draw:

http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/html/electra-fan-ii.html

Amps x Volts = Watts. Let's take the worst case scenario: 10 Amps x 14.4 Volts = 144 Watts. There are 746 W = 1 horsepower. You can verify this paragraph here:

http://www.nap.edu/openbook/0309092612/html/80.html

Your electric fan should be drawing less than 1 horsepower from your motor, even with a 30% efficiency of the alternator (which is an EXTREMELY conservative estimate).

An alternator upgrade is definetly in order, but you would never notice this in the driveline. I'm not sure what's happening with your engine power situation, but I would look into this phenomenon more carefully.

Note that even if your fan was drawing 30A (which is not normal), you'd still be only giving up less than 2 horsepower.

Fan is drawing over 35A at startup and about 25A running. I was also kicking on the A/C at the same time, and had other issues. Bad battery, bad alternator, etc. I now have a new battery and a Quest alternator. The problem has lessened significantly.

These are wicked fans that we are installing. Devil

Since installing mine, the City of Laurel, Mississippi has had to weld several manhole covers shut because as I drove over them, my fan would draw so much air accross them that they would lift, becoming a threat to any vehicle following me. It was quite embarrasing.

One morning, while on my way to work, I was crossing the tracks when the engine stalled. Mad
Before I knew it, the lights and bells started going and the crossing gates began to lower, threatening to block my escape in a matter of seconds. Eyes
In a rare moment of lucidity, I switched on the A/C which activated the e-fan. The truck slowly regained momentum and I was saved! smiley32

OK, I've looked at all the pics and read all the posts, but I can't find any reference to the model of the fan that's under discussion here. I'm under the impression that it's a Hayden fan of some sort.

I've also Googled 'SWANKy fan" with no luck ;-) So.....?

This FAN is a very special fan, it is no longer avaliable unless someone wants to give theirs up.

They were made by BOSCH for Volvo. We got our hands on some awhile back. They are overkill, but that is a good thing IMO.
Most aftermarket fans draw 15A or less while running. A common little 40A cube relay is plenty for one of those.
