So I bought me a new Kenwood CD/mp3 player for my truck... I finally decided to step up to an mp3 receiver, the CDs were getting out of hand.

Anyway, the jackass who owned my truck before me installed a Sony Xplod CD receiver. I have determined that he was a jackass not only because he put a sony Xplod in, but he also completely cut off the original wiring harness male plug connectors... and then ran some lamp-cord around the outside of the grommets into the doors. Now, even though it was lamp cord, I can sort of understand running heavier guage wire if you're also pumping a lot of power (though most people go way overboard, I think) but the worst part is, he ran the lamp cord right up to the door speakers, then for the last two inches or so, he spliced in the lighter guage wire that (I assume) came included with the speakers. I mean, a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.

I've installed plenty of stereos (all in older vehicles), and it's really not too hard, but I was looking forward to finally being able to just buy the wiring adapter, plug it in, and drive away.

Okay, enough of the complaining. Now for the questions:

Anybody have a wiring diagram they can email me? I have searched for a while now, and I can't seem to find one online anywhere. I bought a replacement Nissan-copy plug set that replicates the original, and I planned to wire it in to get it back to stock condition. However, after identifying the basic +12V, ACC +12V, Ground, Left Door +/-, Left Tweeter +/-, Right Door +/-, and Right Tweeter +/-, I don't know what the remaining three wires are for. I already put the new unit in, after going through and removing Retard's wiring of course, but I'm wondering what the last three wires are for.

One of them has +12V when the key is on and the lights are on, so I guess it is for the orange Illumination (Dimmer?) wire from the replacement harness I bought. Maybe one of the other wires is for the Orange/Black Illumination ground? But that still leaves one more wire. Other than 4wd and a V6, my truck doesn't have any other options, so I don't think it came with a factory amp or anything, so I doubt the last wire is a remote lead. It also didn't come with factory rear speakers.

Also, I'm curious about how the stock door tweeters were wired in originally. I assume they were just wired in parallel with their respective door speakers, but the door speakers and tweeters each have their own pair of wires running back to the stereo... why wouldn't Nissan just run two wires to each door, then split off to the tweeters from there? For now, I just left the tweeters disconnected, since they sounded kinda crappy anyway, but I plan on replacing them in the future, and I want to hook them up the way they came originally.

Okay, so I guess that's enough typing for now. Just in case anyone skipped over all of the babble in the middle of the post, all I'm really looking for is a wiring diagram for a '99 Frontier V6 extra cab 4wd, with the base model receiver.

Thanks.

Funny that Bille suggested power antenna, my thought also.

My '96 has all sorts of things ready to be used by appliances and such if it had been ordered as an SE rather than an XE model, so it would be no surprise if that wire of yours was "plumbed" in, but not utilized

Re: schematic. Ask the local nissan dealer if you can get a photocopy of the relevant page from a service manual. They might tell you to piss off, but then again they might say no problem.

Awesome! Thanks guys, that's exactly what I was looking for. So I got most of the wires right, but apparently I was way off with my guess about the door speakers and tweeters being wired in parallel; according to the wiring diagrams, Frontier pickups don't come with rear speakers (except CCs maybe?). So maybe I'll just wire in the tweeters as the rear channel speakers and leave the fader to the front until I get some replacements.

I still don't know exactly what to hook the illumination and lighting wires to on my new receiver, but I'll figure something out.

Thanks again for the help guys. By the way, Datz510, where did you get the wiring diagrams from? Just curious to see if you found an online source... although I see that they're stored on a COX account, so I guess maybe you got them from somwhere else. Anyway, I appreciate the help. Happy Holidays everybody, I think maybe to celebrate my new stereo I'll try to go out and get stuck in the snow somwheres, there's plenty of it right now.

THe illumination control is for the dimmer. The other one was for the lights on buttons and what not when the radio is off but the lights were on. At least on my pioneer in the saturn. What model of kenwood is it?

Andy.. check your private messages.

BTW, one thing you can do is wire up a high pass filter on the leads to the tweeters and just put them in parallel with the front left and right speakers.

This is what I did with mine.. Just figure out what you want your high pass crossover frequency to be and then pick up a Mylar, polypropylene, or even just a non-polarized electrolytic capacitor from Radio Shack with one of the values from this table (capacitances are in the C columns.. I would shoot for 6000hz with around a 5.0uF for 6ohm speaker)

http://www.geocities.com/-shotty-/oldstuff/crossovervalues.html

Once you have the capacitors, just put one in series with the + lead of each tweeter and then wire the capacitor lead and the - lead of the tweeters in parallel with the main speakers.

Here is a good site that explains it better (use the 6db high-pass filter wiring shown at the bottom)

Bill, the model is KDC-MP522.

The stock tweets already have capacitors inline, so I'll probably just pirate those for when I get new tweeters. I'm not sure what their capacitance is right now, but I'll check with Datz's chart and see if they are more or less in the right range.

FYI, I did find an online stereo installation guide:
www.installdr.com
It told me stuff that I already knew mostly, but it could help if you've never installed a stereo before.

Now all I gotta do is make a new box for my sub and get it all hooked up. I've got a low-pass crossover, but my receiver has a selectable frequency crossover for the sub pre-outs, (and the amp actually does too) so that would probably be easier to use.

Thanks for all the help everyone.
