Red top is a good all around battery plus it's about $70 cheaper than the yellow top.

Unless you run a winch or a whole chitload of lights on top, the red top is the better choice.

Too tall, nah. I got a HB and my red top fits in the tray perfectly.

... I was in Pep Boys and they have two sizes of red-tops one was like $109.99 and the other was like $119.99. It seems like one was a 75? size and the other was a 78?size... Warranties were the same i.e. two year full and 84 months pro rated. i didn't see the CCA written on the sign... Good luck and and … CUL.. Don S..'99 4x4 3.3 KC '99 4x4 4.7 WJ '76 4x4 401 FSJ |

Interstate markeds optimas too, full 3 year warrenty, no questions. frankly I've never heard of anyone killing any optima unless they had an alternator problem or some heavy mega wiring stuff (like a winch on a red top)

My redtop was actually too short. Some places sell it with an adapter that snaps onto the bottom or you can buy it separately. You can also do like I did and just use a tap to add more threads to the hold-down bars so the nuts will go down farther. I also had to cut a little on the hold-down cross bar to get it to sit flat on the battery. Easy stuff.

I got 600w of off-road lighting, plus the headlights and fog lights running on a red top and it's held up for two years now.
If you don't plan on draining your battery extensively, repeatedly, then a yellow top might not be necessary... But they are better in those conditions. Many audio folk run 'em. Didn't think about a winch though. Do they really need a yellow top? Heavily Modified 2001 SE 6cyl 5spd 4x4 Solar Yellow |

The book for my Milemarker E8000 says it draws 350 amps at max load.

Ouch! I can see why a winch would need one... But if you're gonna be drawing that much, often - might be better off with a second, separate battery. A red for normal use and a yellow for lights/winch.

What about orbital batteries?

The Exide Orbital batteries are pretty much the same as the Optima. I also hear that Energizer sells a similar battery but it has a MUCH better warranty.
If you really want to splurge on a bad-ass battery, go for a Hawker Energy Odyssey: http://www.odysseyfactory.com/ Brent |

Hawker is the company that makes new 24v sealed batteries that we use in the upgrade for the Mk38 chaingun systems that are installed on ships. This has been a fairly recent change and we have had mixed results with the batteries with some of them being bad from the factory. Actually, the problem is probably with the gun system itself. Not the same battery as the Odyssey.

i run my yellow top dead on a regular basis. i leave on the stereo for hours while at bonfire parties in the desert. one time my hold down broke and my battery beat around the engine bay for a while. it didn't even faze it. i had a regular battery pop loose in my '79 Ramcharger and it not only destroyed the battery but messed up my brand new headers. i'll stick with gel batteries from now on. that and beefy battery hold downs! ha, ha!

Ya you can pick up a optima red top at costco for $99. Oh and they also sell a sweet 1000W DC to AC inverter that has a 2000W peak for $69 too. I was checking it out yesterday hoping I get it for christmas..

Don't Mil. Std. testing NDA's prohibit the public exposure of sensitive details like this? What lab are they being tested in currently?;-) I was wondering the same regarding the two, may just bite the bullet for the yellow top and try the stock one in the old Stang, it needs one badly. Besides, I like the idea of upgradeability in the acc. dept. 2003 Frontier Crew Cab XE 4X4 K&N Filter Autostarter More to come... |

If the battery is bad from the factory, we turn it in and it never gets sent to the fleet. No impact on weapon systems or operational readiness, no sensitivity. The "gun" I was talking about having a problem was a system here in the shop that was awaiting repiar that we had been using to charge the batteries. Only quality end products leave my shop and I don't discuss operational readiness of ships or their systems.
Sorry if there was any confusion. |
