I bought a fan out of a Quest for 40 bucks at the junkyard. It works, has 3 wires, one posi one ground and I am assuming the other one is a switch? I don't know much about wiring...but I'm going to head to Advance Auto Parts to get a temp sensor. Will I need to buy a switch too?

I would think so and a strong relay - w/ a fused supply -back to the batery to handle the amp draw..
YOu do want to be able to overide the fan for water crossings and such.

Three wire fans have two speeds. You can hook them to run on the high side, low side or both.
Im going with a Ford Taurus fan. The stock clutch fan isn't cutting it in stop and go with the A/C on.

The V8 Tarus fans are nuts. Mount one to your roof and it'll pull you down the road.

I'm using a set of Stanza fans. Both on low speed. Works great Wink

I've been looking for an electric fan to replace the stock assembly in my 86 V6 HBDY. Primarily looking into the Quest fans. There are two types, a Heavy Duty and a standard. What is the difference? Also wondering whether the mounting holes on the radiator will line up with the ones on the shroud. Any advice?

92Path, did the Stanza fans mount right up or did you have to modify anything?

Very slight modification...cut 45* angles off the bottom corners. One side bolted up and the other is held on with zip ties at the moment.

You might want to consider an alternator upgrade if you plan on installing a Taurus fan. I upgraded my stock '87 Pathfinder to a 110A Quest alternator before I installed the Taurus fan. They do pull a lot of amps on start up, so you'll need to use the relay from whatever fan controller kit you buy to fire a second heavy duty relay which sends power to the fan. I found one that's designed to run tow truck accessories, but any relay rated over 125 amps or so should work. Do a web search on "taurus fan install" and you'll get a bunch of info you can use to install any electric fan, including where to splice a diode inline to protect your relay.

Well I bought a temp sensor from Advance that is preset at 185 degrees. Is that too high? I was in a hurry and didn't realize it wasn't ajustable when I bought it.

Mine's a 185 as well and I think I'm going to change to an adjustable as soon as my move to Florida is over. I installed the probe where the directions said, but the temp guage reads hotter than it ever used to before the fan kicks on and causes me a bit of concern.

Did you get the kind that sits in teh fins of the radiator or the kind that screws into the block?
If the latter, I am having a hard time figuring out where to mount mine, and am curious where others put theirs.

Well since I live in FL, I think I will take it back and get an adjustable one.

Wire the coil side of the relay to your ignition and put a switch inline so you can turn it off for water crossings. My adjustable temp sensor lasted about a week. Wish I didn't spend the 35 bucks.

I bought two solanoids from Alliedelectronics.com, rated at 200 inrush and 80 continous amps at about 14 bucks a piece. Relays won't last with a Taurus fan.

I'm using some bosche 60 amp relays with mine...for over 2 years and they work great. Same goes for my adjustable thermostat. The adjustable works fine as long as you run it to a relay and not directly to the fan.

I've also heard it's not a good idea to have a coninously running fan....at least not in places where it gets cooler. They say it can slow down the initial warmup of your engine and also make it run too cool on colder days.

I run mine with a 3-way switch on the dash:
-Always on (great for AC on hot days before thermo kicks on)
-Thermo controled
-Always off
