First off. How are they ruining? If you are ruining them by offroading(water, mud, etc...), than there is no solution exept for a relocation. This is off subject but, I went through 5 alternators on my 90 pathfinder in 13 months. I have had my current one for the longests, 6 months. I found that if I spray the alternator down really well with WD-40 before I go wheeling and then hose it off really good when im done, it has saved mine on more than 3 occassions. I would recommend that if that is your problem. The only reason a high output alternator is necassary is when you have lots of stuff(lights, stereo, winch, etc...) and yours cant keep the battery charged. Hope that helped.

They've never been ruined by wheeling (thanks for the WD-40 trick, though)... they just fail. I have a pretty good Alpine system, and added a winch last year, but the first one failed before I put the winch on. I just had a voltage drop test done, and the system isn't overdrawing anyplace. I began to have the problems when my stock Nissan alt died and I replaced it with the NAPA rebuild. My mechanic for my other car calls them "NAPA rekilled" parts, and suggested a higher output alternator, which I've been meaning to do anyway since I added the winch. Any ideers? (I'm going to cross-post this under Shade Tree Mech. also)
