Im getting a winch for pretty cheap from a friend. He had it installed on his old hay haulin' Nissan 720 which recently blew its motor.

The wires are all hacked up, and he dont even know how they went...

As far as wiring up the (+) wire, can I just use a Ford starter solenoid? Would the several consecutive minutes use, as compared to its normal duty running for only seconds, burn it up?

You will fry the Ford solenoid pretty quick. It is not designed to carry that big of a load. It is also a part time solenoid, not continuous duty. You will need a continuous duty solenoid capable of carrying up to 500 amps depending on which winch you have. I use a 500 amp 12v DC switch to turn main power on and off. That is because the batteries are in the back and I wanted insurance in case of an accident.

Nevermind. It was only a 2,000lb. I am considering a PTO winch now...

Yep, winches pull a ton of current. My M8000 pulls 435amps continuous under full load. Last time I used it, it fried the battery. lol

If you are going to get a winch, get a new one, or at least one that is complete. Also get an Optima yellow top battery, new battery terminal clamps, a pair of leather work gloves, and a recovery kit with snatch block (still havent got this yet).

yeah, in 8 minutes of winching, it completely drained the crappy walmart special I had in the truck. I popped the hood the next day and the thing was oozing acid and bulging pretty badly.
