Seems like the threads on this are old.
Any advice on a trail GPS for my truck? Meh. |

Good question, with all the new models out there I was wondering the same thing...

Depends on what you want, I have both a garmin e-trax legend, that I can stick to the windshield. And I also have a laptop mounted that I can run a GPS reciever off of a USB. They both have there advantages. The Garmin is small and I can take it out of the truck, but the laptop has a much bigger screen so it is a lot easier to plot courses and make corrections on. The laptop allows me to use a few different mapping programs to find what I am looking for.

Laptop is too big I think.
Regular hard mounted GPS. Almost exclusively trails. Meh. |

I love my GPS system. Its the Garmin Street Pilot c330. The only thing i dont like about it is it doesnt display elevation. You can upload maps to it easily with an SD card, Full color touch screen, voice prompting turn-by-turn directions and a whole bunch of other cool stuff. You can get them fairly cheap now too through http://www.gpsworldsupply.com right now.
You might also like the Garmin GPS V. Its a little old though. |

So do all of them drop breadcrumbs to make trails that are not on the maps? Then can you save them to the SD Card and download them onto your computer?

Mine doesnt, but I remember someone talking about hows there did that. It would just track what they did and all he had to do was hit save and it would remember the entire trail. Mine with the SD card is you buy maps, put them on your computer, then upload them to the GPS system. Datz has a really cool Garmin map set that has just about every trail you could think of.

For a smaller size you can always run a palm pilot, with most of the same topo mapping that you can with a laptop. Garmin mapsource is the primary topo that I use and it is used in both the hand held and laptop. For street trafic I tend to use MS streets, I just picked up National Geo back roads explorer, but have not spent enough time with it to give any recomendations yet.

Product Review by Reserector: The Cobra NavOne 2500 that I got for Christmas was advertised to do that, but when I got it, that feature was missing. I wrote and asked about it and was told that it would be part of a software update in a month. A month went by and I wrote again and they replied "Sorry, but that feature will not be added due to programming changes". I was livid! I bitched so much that they offered to buy it back for every penny I paid. The only thing they make (made) with the TRAILS featue were two older models on clearance. They would have let me trade-up for a discontinued model if I paid the difference. Nice, huh? I told them I would keep it and give it to my dog. All I wanted was what I paid for. Anyway, forget Cobra for trails. It kicks butt on the road, though. |

Wow, I thought there would be more out there. My friend who owns a Acura SUV has the NAV module in it and when you run out of road, you push a button and it starts to drop bread crumbs, not sure if it can be saved to a card though. I would have thought that all models would not do this. Guess these are still for people that only drive on streets.
I would also like one that actually reported my position to the internet, that way if I don't come home from a trip, someone could find me, or if my truck is stolen, I could track it down. I know this service is available with a monthly service fee, but I just want it all in ONE one unit. Don't want much do I. --------------------------------------------------------- 04 SAS Frontier, 8" Lift Total, 35x12.5x15 MT's with Staun Internal Beadlockers, Calmini Crawler Gears, ARB Front & Rear Air Lockers. |
