Can I reliably test the alternator one my z24 with an ampmeter/voltmeter? What should I get with the car off? Chasing down electrical problems and cant quite get it running. Got it cranking but theres this and that that need to be fixed.

On a slightly related topic, theres a wire with the same type of plug that the ignition switch part that hooks into the starter has. Its in a similar area, just doesnt reach that far. Any ideas what it is?

Thanks guys. Yes I have two books and am trying to figure it all out.

Take it to Checker/Kragen or Auto Zone and ask them to test your alternator on the truck.

it doesnt run yet. One of the problems was the PO had the alt hooked up backwards, it had been sitting in a backyard for years before I got it so Im assuming thats when it happened.

A good battery should read 12.6 volts. With the engine running it should show 13.8 to 14.5, give or take a few tenths.
Can you post a picture of the plug?

The vehicle does not run. I am trying to find a way to test the alternator without the vehicle running.

Plugs?? Theyre all new, I rebuilt the engine and am finishing up some electrical work on a car that hasnt run in probably ten years and had rodents living in it.. It was also worked on by at least one idiot before it got to me.

use a volt reader (dvom tester) on your battery with truck off, 12.6 volts should be where its at. with running should be where resurector said. if it continually drops while running, alt is either bad or not hooked up.

i have an alt from a v6 if you want to buy it if needed.

i don't know of any way to test the alt with the truck off.

I'd pull the alt out and take it to your nearest autoparts store.. they will test them for free and tell you whether its good or not.

As fare as I know there is no way to test the alt in a vehicle that is not running.

Thats why they are recommending to pull the alt and take it to get tested. Plus they can tell you exactly what is wrong with it if something is wrong.

Yep, I didn't realize the truck wasn't running, you'll have to pull the alt to have it tested. It's not tuff, maybe a 20 min pull.
