On my 720 when the switch is connected and the clutch released it dosnt run very good and backfires through the carb and dosnt idle, so i unbolted it. So my question is what does it (supposed) to do.

That's very weird, sounds like a short circuit or something because the switch is only there to interupt the starter as far as I know.

Actaully I think theres 2 switchs on the clutch and neither are used for starter. None of my 85s had starter bypass circuits.

Used when decelerating to prevent anti back fire.

I would have to look in my old FSM.

Its used for running on one set of plugs. Normally all 8 fire. You may not be running on all 8 at idle without this switch!

Its connected directly to the ECU (computer) Check your ECU for codes. The switch basically tells the ECU when the clutch is depressed. The other switch is on the trans to tell ECU when its in Neutral.

That may be what it is for because i have a straight exhaust with a glass pack and if i use the engine to brake it back fires like crazy, and when i shift through the gears? maybe thats why it is been doing that

Yes you have an ECU under the driver seat. I have the Factory service manual. I am looking at the schematics for the switch. Its pretty basic what the ECU does. Mostly timing, carb, fuel pump and spark plug control. Its steel little box. The 86.5+ are under the pass seat and are mostly aluminum.

What year is your service manual for, not to go against what you said, but i looked at mine and there wasnt a ecu nder the drivers seat???? but there is a pretty small box under the pasenger seat whith some wiring, but that is all i can find, i even looked under the carpet, I think it was a year or two later that the had the computer controlled carbs and stuff. My carb only has two wires, so i dont know, but with my experiance w/ this truck who knows maybe someone cut it out??

You are right theres no ECU until 1984 on CA models. All 1985+ models have ECCS (ECU).

I have a 86 FSM for 720s only. But I used it on my 2 85 720s.

I would still fix or replace that switch since it does control all 8 plugs. You might be driving on just 4, which is quite a power drop, (long story).

I can not find a schematic for 83 older with the clutch switch in it. Also Check the FICD on the carb. Had problems with that once.

Merry Xmas. Big Grin

I just thought it was a switch to keep you from starting the rig with it in gear, at least that is how mine used to work, and the rig I had also had a "interlock" button to bypass the switch so you could start the rig with one foot on the gas and one on the brake.

I ve never seen a interlock switch on the 720s. Not mentioned in the 86 FSM. But I have that switch in my 93 and had one in my 88 pathy. Unfortunately I do not have one in my 96 pathy.

I figured it out, the swith does fire the exhaust spark plugs, the reason mine was running so crapy was that the #2 were swaped, put them in the right spots and now it works fine, wish i could remember what i did with those bolts that hold the switch in smiley35
Thanks for the help, joshua

Cool. Chug You didnt mention you just swapped the plugs. I remember that the second set is the exhaust side. The intake side always fire.

The ficd is the fast idle cutoff something. Its turns off the fuel to carb to prevent dieseling and during deceleration and idle. For example if clutch switch are ON.
