Things to know
Cobra and Uniden, same company.
all radios put out 4 watts power to the antenna

The cobra 19 a nice radio. I prefer a radio with NB (noise blanker) and ANL (automotive noise limiter), to keep the static noise level down. I is all preferences though. I am using a Uniden pc-68ltw (or it replacement the pc-68 ELITE)
I have used the Cobra 148 and the Cobra 75 WX ST in the past and liked them alot. The 148 is a big radio and I wanted something smaller and the speaker went out on the 75 and never repaired it.

Just make sure that what you get will make you happy, the wrong radio can give you headache if you don't like it.

that one has the ANL (or something like it) that controls static volume... that and compact design were my only requirements...

I didn't know they all put out 4 watts to antenna.. thats helpful, cause a few that I was looking at, mentioned that like it was "industry first"... haha

thanks for the help Goat!

I picked up a Midland at Wally World for $35. It is compact and works as well as any other stock CB I have ever owned.
I have modified radios, but they are much larger, so they sit on the shelf.

They are all pretty equal, unless you are looking for one that can be easily modified with stronger finals and extra channels. That stuff is a waste of money on a trail radio, though.

I too have used and STILL use the Cobra 75 WX ST. I love it simply because it has everything in the mic/speaker unit. No "other" control box (or whatever) It's also very easy to use. Later...

That's what I have been using but mine just stopped transmitting, receives find, but hooked up to the SWR meter, there is no transmit power going out. Only other issue is the speaker on the mic doesn't put out a loud and clear enough sound. Needs an external speaker hooked up.

Have decided to go with the Wilson 1000 antenna.

I have had that Cobra 19 from the link in Arod's first post for about 4 months. I like it because it's small, simple, and $30. I've had 3 19s of different vintages. Both previous radios were modded by some guy for output ~40w. But both died eventually. The ANL was kinda crappy on the old models, but it's gone on the new one.

The 75 is freakin cool. Wink

I had a Wilson antenna a few years ago. It was great. Got a Firestik II now.

Most likely a broken wire in the mic cord down by the plug.

Agree. I'll be glad to take it off your hands to see if I can repair it.

Good choice on the antenna. Make sure you find a good place to mount it. I plan on picking up the Wilson silverload to replaced my beat up Cobra 3". BTW, I'm running a Radio Shack rebadged Cobra 29 or something like that.

Or a broken/bad antenna connection leading to a burned out crystal.

You mean final output transister?
Not likely if it is not 'peaked'. Most stock radios can be keyed with no antenna at all without being damaged.
Try it some time. If I am wrong, I will admit that I was wrong. Razz

here is the picture of the Cobra 75

Nice unit but a pain to try to repair due to the split unit.

I've owned 2 Cobra Classic 29's...

http://www.electotronics.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=100381

I've owned a couple of the smaller CB's and they usually crap out with in a year or two... The 29's are awesome, a bit bulky but they work great!

Admit it then. Big Grin I just purchased a new CB because I burned out the old one due to the center conductor of the antenna wire being broken and unknowingly using it that way. I have no idea how long it had been broken. Received fine, would not send, good connections through the mic cable. It was an old Radio Shack model, weird din connector on the mic, not worth fixing.

I'll not be trying it again with the new set- even to get that admission from you. Razz
