Custom fiberglassing.

Lots of money to pay someone if you don't know how to do it yourself. It really isn't too difficult to do yourself, just very time consuming and messy.

If you were local, and were serious, my friend and I do glass. I made the center console in my truck myself...

The only prob I can see with putting subs in the hatch, is noise. You are going to have to invest in lots of Dynomat to absorb the vibrations that the subs will thow out. Also consider weight... How much can those gas shocks hold on the tailgate before collapsing. Figure with all the fiberglass, and a coupla 12" subs Wink, you are prolly going to weigh in close to an additional 50-60lbs...

All that aside, that is a waaaayy cool idea Cool

I can glass ... not that good, but i can glass.. I am looking at 8" so weight shouldn't be that bad..those shocks can hold a bit and if not.. I will think of something else. I just don't have lots of space to give up.

Then I would say go for it smiley22

You will just have to read the specs on the subs to make sure you get the box space right. Then you make some pods, mount em into the hatch where you want the speakers to be, mount the speakers, and you are golden Wink

It is a lot of work though. When you are done, it will be worth it....

Greg, how hard/difficult and time consuming would it be to redo an entire center section of the dash? It would be in the pathy, and would comprise of the entire section from the climate control all the way down. Also, what kind of costs would be involved?

Wow, I was thinking about the exact same thing last week, but then I decided that it would probably be too heavy for the gas shocks (when it gets cold I already have to prop the door up with a ski pole). Also, I like to haul crap in the back of my truck so any nice work would be smashed to pieces in no time, so I decided to go with a removable Infinity Basslink when I do a system (but SAS comes first).

As greg said, vibration is a big thing, my glass window already vibrates a bit as it is (pathfinder) so without some work it would probably shake itself to pieces.

Do it and change my mind!

I've been thinking about redoing my center dash also from the climate control down. I also need some custom glass enclosures made for the rear cargo area for over the wheel wells.

Flip,

It would be pretty difficult to do. I remember talking to you a while ago about the project. We would probably have to take out the entire dash and evac controls. It would probably take several weekends to do (due to cure times and all). You could probably do it in a week, but my schedule doesn't allow for it.

Materials will probably run you a coupla hundred. You need resin, epoxy, fiberglass, filler, and paint.

To give you an idea, I paid probably 50 bucks in materials to do the small center console under the dash.

i had a similar quest recently - i must have space in the back of my pathy to sleep/carry gear in. I also really appreciate the two 15's that i have. My floor under the back seats rusted through, and that gave me an idea - so i cut it all out, and made a custom metal box that dropped down a few inches (gained by BL) - fits my 15s nicely... pictures are coming up in the pathfinder forum shortly...
