Just saw this thread over on Pirate. From what I gather, they are going to tear it up to make hiking trails? WTF?

I sincerely doubt there's no more granite underneath that surface layer. Certainly there's an eroded layer between layers of jointed granite.

It sounds like they're making a hiking trail- not necessarily eliminating the 4x4 route.

Or did I miss something?

No, it looks like they're going to make the catalina end into a fricking highway instead of the kickass articulationfest that it is.

The video is spot on...that granite stops erosion. Without it, it'll just make big trenches where their new 'road' is.

1998 Frontier 4x4, 2002 Xterra 4x4, 2007 AWD Murano, 1970 Chevy CST10 lowrider, and an Intruder VS800.

I dreamt I was a muffler last night. When I woke up, I was exhausted.

WTF are they thinking? That makes no sense at all. Confused

Watch that first video. "We don't have 4 wheel drive capability"...they're in a freakin Polaris Ranger. Obviously, they do.

We may have a chance at getting it stopped. I am actually meeting someone from the Arizona Daily Star at the trailhead today to cover the story. We have gotten a lot of feathers ruffled over the lack of thought involved in the process that they are using to destroy the road. Most of what they are destroying is drivable by any stock 4x4. They claim they are doing this to allow access to the top of the ridge for a newly developed hiking trail.

Something funny though, a guy from the Blue Ribbon coalition apparently said he doesn't make enough money to get involved. I thought they were supposed to be on our side.

Either way, this will be ammo for us in the future if the forest service claims we damage roads by driving 4x4 vehicles over them. The contractors are using a 12'6" wide track hoe on an 8' wide road!!!!!!!!!

Wow. Not funny at all & extremely disappointing. Good for youfor not jacking that guy right in the mouth for being a lazy muthaf***er. Glad I have never given a dime to the BRC.

Thanks Tim & good luck! Keep us posted.

admittedly that spot was gnarly and scared the poop out of me the one time I went down it, but there is a bypass down the hill around it.

It is an illegal bypass, planned to be closed off. According to the forest service, rather than using the bypass and calling it "legal", they preferred to break up the granite and ruin the main route????????

When we got up there yesterday they had just finished the rock wall. Unfortunately we were just too late on this one.
