Here's the email I sent. Feel free to plagarize my comments for your own.
Dear Nora Rasure, Forest Supervisor My name is Andy Schauer and I run a Mesa-based OHV related website - www.nissan4wheelers.com . Our group regularly recreates on the Coconino forest as well as other national forests in Arizona and the recent announcement of proposing only 24.5 miles of motorized trails and a closure of hundreds of miles of currently legal trails that are enjoyed by OHV users is of grave concern to myself and our thousands of members. Our group regularly participates in Phoenix area trail cleanups and we adhere to Tread Lightly principles of land use. The outright ban of usage of existing roads is an extreme means of dealing with any issues the Coconino districts are proposing I also find it troubling that while there is a Travel Management Rule that clearly allows so-called “user created†routes to be included into the travel plans, that the districts refused to consider their designation. I would ask that the Districts to consider the trails the Coconino Trail Riders have proposed. I would ask that the Coconino National Forest not only publish the specific trails under consideration for closure, but also to take email and written comments on behalf of OHV users around the state into consideration. A considerable percentage of Arizona residents engage in OHV activities, and by shutting them out of these decisions completely, you're not acting in the best interests of all involved. As OHV users, the vast majority of us are equally as concerned as Forest officials on the environmental impact of OHV use on public lands. I do believe, however, that usage of existing trails creates no further damage than the construction of the trail itself originally did. Rather than sweeping acts of prohibition, you should instead focus efforts on partnering with OHV groups to weed out those who don't obey the rules and to prosecute them to the full extent of the law for violations. National Forests were set aside for the people to enjoy. By closing trails you not only close out OHV users, but you also make the forests inaccessible to those who may not have the means to don a backpack and go out hiking in it. Closing trails only favors a very specific group of extreme environmentalists with no interest in any agenda but their own. I do ask on behalf of OHV users statewide that we have input on sweeping decisions being made, and that you reconsider your position on this issue. Thank you. I hate to say I told ya' so. I posted up about this back in December. (Clicky)
I started dealing with this crap back in October of last year. I attended the first public meeting in February and submitted my comments. They were supposed to hold another meeting one month later. I was told that I would be notified because I was on the mailing list. I called back a couple of times and was told that the location was not decided yet. They must have decided at the last minute, because according to their website, the meeting was held. They are sneaky bastards. The few trails I know for sure that I want kept open were blocked with dirt berms shortly after my formal request to keep them open. Coincidence? Not likely. Trails in all other parts of the NF are not blocked. OHV users are just a big old bother to forestry people. All they want to do is grow trees. They don't seem to care if I am out there as long as I don't ask them for anything. It seems like the harder I try, the more of a smoke screen I get. I hope y'all have better luck. |

Florida is the same way. All trails in the forest used to be open unless marked closed. Now it's all trails leading into a national forest are closed unless marked open. You get caught it's a federal crime. The fish and game warden is a federal officer.
Sad to see all the hatred towards OHV users. 1995 KC XE-V6 4x4. |

Cripes!, don't bureaucrats realize that if you close down the majority of trails that everyone will be concentrated into a MUCH SMALLER area- which will only be degraded that much faster by the MUCH INCREASED impact? dumb, dumb, dumb

It's about who gets to decide: how much energy we will have... where that energy will come from... what it will cost... It's about simulations, scenarios and monsters conjured up by computer models that should never be used to chart government policy -- especially on matters that will profoundly affect our livelihoods, living standards, life spans and dreams of a better future.
