What causes the speedometer to jump around between the speed range of 10 to 30 mph?

Also sometimes it drops to zero and stays there.

Noticed the Odometer does not move when the speedo is not moving.

you might want to check the wiring to the speedo sensor on the transfer case. Checking wiring. Bust out your voltmeter Smile

They magnetically attract metal particles?

It's a fine line between clever and stupid.

Possibly. I've never pulled one of the electric speedos on a wd21. Lots of cars have speed sensors that use a magnet and will act up if small bits of metal get attached. Same goes for wheel speed sensors, crank and cam position sensors, etc...

I just looked in the FSM but didn't get much out of it. But I found a photo of one online and it looks like all of the magnetic bits are outside the tcase so metal shavings shouldn't be a problem. BTW, I found new sensors from $60 to $120.

I have a 94 pathy and ending up replacing the speedmenter assembly, took about 30 min, not bad at all. There was a short in the speedometer mechanism, which is full electronic, no cables at all. Cost me $122.00. at the dealer and included re calibrating the speedometer, and I have put over 30,000 on my new speedo, no problems. My used to bounce around, the cruise control quit working, and so forth. I had no voltage issues at the speedo gear wiring on the tranny.

I have a 95 HB p/u that I replaced the speedo around 110K miles. There is a speedo problem with 94-95 pathy's and p/u's. They like to do what you are have problems with, sticking on 0 or jumping all over the place. Only solution I have ever heard of is replacement. Not real difficult if you know how to take your dash apart.
