Hello All,
I have a 1988 TBI pathfinder V6 VG30i engine.
I have been making repairs to the engine for smogg problems. Currently i have repaired broken studs in both Manifolds.

This is my first VG30 engine to work on for smogg problems here in california.

What my question is;

I own a D21 Z24I hardbody truck with a 4 cyc.
If i put my finger under EGR body and push upwords the engine starts to die. Quickly i remove my finder and the idle is fine.

Now i am trying out the 6 cyl in the same way and the engine doesn't even slow down at all.

All of you guys out there that own a older truck or path finder in these years. Does yours slow down to a ruff idle while pushing up on the inside of the EGR valve?

Has anyone else have a clogged VG30i intake manifold?

Thank you,
Leroy

I *think* that's what should happen.

There's a code for a bad EGR. Try this :

At idle, the engine should begin to die once the EGR valve opens. The EGR only operates between 900-3200 rpm's. It shuts down if the engine is cold or if its idling.

If nothing happens when you open the valve at idle, then either the assembly is bad or the passage between the EGR and the manifold is clogged. I failed CA emissions because my passage was clogged. Had to remove the EGR and scrape out all of the carbon. I cleaned the EGR and manifold 3 years prior while rebuilding the VG30, so I assume that this problem is common if it can develop in such a short amount of time.

THank you for responing Scott,

Does your VG30 just have one single inlet for the EGR to clean out? You don't think i need to remove the manifold to get in there to clean it.

You're probably right, the whole manifold needs to be removed. I didnt do the work, I had a repair shop diagnose and fix the problem.

You do know that in CA, you might qualify for the CAP (Consumer Assistance Program) if you are income eligible or your vehicle failed at a test-only station. The state will pay up to $500 of your repair bill.

I qualified a few years ago when I was in college and not making squat. I had a shop do all the work and all I had to pay was $20. Look into it.

Hello All,
EGR problem fixed. Took off the TBI unit and saw carbon completely blocking the EGR hole in the manifold. Needed to remove the EGR and clean it out too. Also the EGR temp sending unit needed to be cleaned. Going to reassemble and start her up very soon.
